From Abel Leonard, Lafia
Governor Abdullahi Sule has ordered urgent remedial work on the Keana–Giza road after floods destroyed key sections, forcing residents and motorists to take long detours through Lafia and Obi.
The Governor gave the directive on Tuesday during an assessment tour of the affected communities and an inspection of the ongoing Keana–Abuni–Kanje road project.
He explained that the flood’s impact on the Keana–Giza road has become a top priority, noting that the destruction has completely separated the two communities.
“The impact of the flood is most devastating on the road connecting Keana and Giza, which has completely separated the two communities. In order to drive from Keana to Giza, commuters now have to go through Lafia–Obi–Keana. This is something that we have to do immediately. We have to find some contractors to quickly repair the damage done by the flood,” Sule said.
To address the emergency, he directed the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Bureau for Rural Development, Engineer Muhammad Sidi Sani, to engage a contractor to assess the damage and commence remedial work. He warned that without swift intervention, Keana town itself risked being cut off from the rest of the state.
Sule commended the Osana of Keana, HRH Alhaji Abdullahi Amegwa Agbo, and the council chairman, Hon. Adamu Aboki, for their efforts in calming residents, while particularly praising the chairman for his performance in the area of security and development.
“I thank the Commissioner for Environment and all the other people, especially the Chairman of the local government, one of the most performing chairmen when it comes to the area of security and development. I thank every one of them for what they have done so far,” he added.
On the Keana–Abuni–Kanje road project, however, the Governor expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work and urged the contractor handling the project to speed up delivery. He assured that an additional 20 percent of the total project cost would be released to facilitate faster completion.
The Governor was accompanied by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Margaret Elayo; Secretary to the Government of the State, Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, PhD; and the State Project Coordinator of the NEWMAP–EIB Nasarawa Project Management Unit, Dr. Mohammed Isma’il, among other government officials.
It will be recalled that floods recently devastated parts of Keana Local Government following heavy rainfall, cutting off Giza and leaving the bridge linking Keana to the rest of the state at risk of collapse.
