Good News for Delhi-NCR Commuters: 82km Rapid Rail, 12.3km Pink Line Extension Set to Begin Operations Soon

Delhi-NCR is preparing for a major upgrade in transport connectivity with the impending launch of two significant projects, expected around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on 17 September. The projects include the 82km Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) corridor connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut, and the 12.3km Majlis Park–Maujpur metro extension on the Pink Line. Currently, 55km of the Namo Bharat corridor, spanning 11 stations from New Ashok Nagar to Meerut South, is operational. Trial runs on the remaining section have been completed. Once fully functional, travel from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut will take just 58 minutes. Train frequency, now at 15 minutes, will improve to 10 minutes after the corridor is fully operational, as per a report by TOI. In Delhi, Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar stations are already in use. Sarai Kale Khan will emerge as a key transport hub, linking the Pink Line metro, Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and city bus services. The Majlis Park–Maujpur extension, part of DMRC’s Phase IV expansion, is also nearing completion. Currently, the Pink Line from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar is the longest in the network at 59.2km with 38 stations. The new 12.3km stretch with eight stations will complete the circular route. Key features of this extension include a bridge over the Yamuna and Delhi’s first 1.4km double-decker viaduct between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar, with the metro running on the upper deck and road traffic on the lower deck. Another bridge connecting Soorghat and Sonia Vihar stations will mark the fifth Yamuna crossing for Delhi Metro. All eight new stations—Burari, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur Village, Soorghat, Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, and Yamuna Vihar—are above ground. Phase IV also includes the construction of three priority corridors: RK Ashram Marg–Janakpuri West (Magenta Line extension), Aerocity–Tughlaqabad (Golden Line), and Majlis Park–Maujpur. Three additional corridors were approved last year, including Lajpat Nagar–Saket G Block, Inderlok–Indraprastha, and Rithala–Narela–Kundli. In total, DMRC is adding about 112km of new metro lines across Delhi as part of Phase IV, following the opening of the Janakpuri West–Krishna Park stretch in January.
