KUCHING, Sept 27: Golf has been confirmed as one of the sporting events to be contested in the 2027 SEA Games, with Kuching chosen as the host city for the competition.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the decision had been finalised by the organising committee, with Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) selected as the venue.

“For the 2027 SEA Games, golf has been confirmed as one of the events to be contested, and it will be held here in Kuching at the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS).

“This has already been decided by the committee,” he announced when addressing participants at the VIP Golf Tournament held in conjunction with the Borneo Games 2025 here today. An audio recording of his speech was later shared with DayakDaily.

Speaking to reporters later, Abdul Karim explained that Sarawak had been allocated 16 out of the 36 sports lined up for the Games.

“At this time, it has been confirmed that 16 events will take place in Kuching. One of them, if I’m not mistaken, is golf. And if it is golf, there is no other venue but here at KGS,” he said, adding that other confirmed sports include tenpin bowling, archery, taekwondo, cricket, shooting, swimming, wushu, squash, tennis, lawn bowls, muay thai and petanque.

He revealed that there are appeals from other countries to include three or four additional events, but it has yet to be decided whether they will be accepted and if Sarawak will host any of them.

Abdul Karim emphasised that hosting the SEA Games would bring wide-ranging benefits to Sarawak beyond sports.

“It’s not just about tourism but also for the general public. Hotels and those in the sports arena will benefit.

“Fans will get to see high-performing athletes from across Asia, and some may even get the chance to volunteer at the tournament venues,” he said.

He added that while most venues in Kuching are already in place and may only need minor upgrades, the Sarawak Stadium, which will host the opening ceremony, will undergo major renovations. — DayakDaily
