The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF) said Indian cotton stands to benefit from a global shift towards natural and sustainable fibres, as it held its 46th Annual General Meeting at GKS Cotton Chambers here on Sunday (September 28, 2025).
Re-elected president J. Thulasidharan said consumers and brands are moving away from synthetics in favour of eco-friendly alternatives. “This is a moment tailor-made for cotton, and our association will work to position Indian cotton as the fibre of choice in a planet-conscious era,” he said.
On production, Mr. Thulasidharan projected India’s 2025-26 cotton crop at 320–325 lakh bales across 12 million hectares. He added that the Union government’s proposed allocation of ₹2,500 crore for cotton research could help double yields over time. “With research, technology and implementation, achieving 500 lakh bales is within reach,” he said.
Vice-president P. Nataraj acknowledged challenges such as tariff barriers and competition from synthetics but said the sustainability drive created new opportunities. He noted that India’s production base, strong spinning sector and integrated textile value chain gave it an edge in global supply chains.
Honorary Secretary Nishant Asher said the federation would strengthen engagement with policymakers to ensure greater support for Indian cotton.
Other office-bearers re-elected for 2025-26 include Vice-President Aditya Krishna Pathy and Honorary Joint Secretary Chetan Joshi.
