Glenview Methodist Preschool Celebrates 60 Years Of Promoting Play

The fully independent, non-denominational preschool serves local children on Harlem Avenue.
GLENVIEW, IL — Since 1965, Glenview Methodist Preschool has been serving Glenview children and beyond with its play-based curriculum. The fully independent, non-denominational preschool is located at 727 Harlem Ave.
Last weekend, nearly 400 people attended Glenview Methodist Preschool’s 60th anniversary celebration. The “amazing turnout” included many current and former teachers, as well families. Organizers tell Patch the event was held at the school and featured catering by Michael’s Grill of Highland Park, entertainment by The Scribble Monster, two face painters, two balloon artists, a collaborative commemorative masterpiece, and a slideshow of photos and videos from the past 60 years.
“The GMPS community is a special one, reaching across the North Shore for the past six decades,” Alex Simon, GMPS media relations, said.
The school’s philosophy on early education is highlighted by a quote from Dr. Stuart Brown, founder of the National Institute of Play, who once said, “Nothing lights up a child’s brain like play.” GMPS’s curriculum goals include:
Socially, by fostering rewarding relationships with children and adults.
Emotionally, by providing a gradual transition from home to school, meeting each child and parent with trust; offering opportunities to test relationships with peers and surroundings in order to better establish their images of themselves as worthwhile individuals.
Physically, by encouraging the use of large and small muscles and exploring the relationships between his/her own body and environmental factors.
Cognitively, by helping develop problem-solving skills, expanding verbal communication and logical thinking skills, and developing early literacy skills including phonemic awareness.
