A much-loved west end institution has closed its doors and is now set for a rebrand and a new name.
Pub operators Mitchells & Butlers recently caused a bit of a stooshie with fans when they proposed a change of name for The Rock in Hyndland.
Plans sent to Glasgow City Council revealed that it was set to become The Hyndland bar – but it appears that now, as it closes for works to begin, a compromise has been reached.
The famous bar will now be known as Hyndland Rock, and the team posted on social media: “And just like that. We are closed. Thanks for all your custom over the years, and more to come on the Hyndland Rock soon.”
In the proposals by operators Mitchells & Butlers, the popular bar is set to be refurbished with an improved beer garden and external lighting with changes to the ground floor plan. It will close for around two months, with the reopening date set for the end of November.
The plans also show a change in exterior colour, the name and a new look for the beer garden – they can be seen here.
Locals and visitors alike love the local pub, which is well known thanks to its live sports offering, quizzes and the fact it’s dog friendly.
Speaking about the changes recently, the team previously posted: “To all our lovely customers. We are excited to announce the next chapter for The Rock. As many regulars know, the project is to transform the outside and inside of the pub, for a long overdue refurbishment and the return of our well-missed kitchen! There is lots to look forward to, and our popular pub quiz, live music and sport aren’t going anywhere.
“Unfortunately, this means the establishment will be closed from the 5th of October until the 24th of November, so we will return just in time for the festive season! More details for Christmas bookings coming soon.
“We are very excited for what’s to come and to introduce The Hyndland Rock in all its glory, but to say goodbye to The Rock as it currently stands (and has done for almost 60 years!), we have some very exciting events coming up. Do keep an eye out on our Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok for more information! We hope to see many familiar faces over the next few weeks as we celebrate the end of an era. All the best, Team Rock.”
According the top historical site, Old Glasgow Pubs, the Rock was first built back in the 1960s becoming the first pub in Hyndland and was built using the stone from the old house that formerly stood on the site and was demolished to make way for it.
