A community centre in Glasgow has closed and three children will be reported after fireworks were ‘launched into traffic’.
Ashgill Recreation Centre, in Milton, announced on Wednesday, September 24, that it would close for the rest of the week following reports of anti-social behaviour. It is understood that the centre has faced ongoing issues with staff and memebers of the public being threatened during youth sessions.
Taking to Facebook, the Glasgow City Council youth centre wrote: “Due to ongoing issues with Antisocial Behaviour, the Ashgill Recreation Centre will close at 5:30pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.
“Engagement is taking place with partners, including Police Scotland to ensure the centre remains a safe and welcoming environment for our partners, customers and our staffing team.”
The centre had previously taken to social media on Tuesday, September 2, to announce that all youth sessions had been paused due to ‘recent incidents involving antisocial behaviour and disrespect towards staff and centre members’.
The statement read: “The decision to suspend provision follows recent incidents involving antisocial behaviour and disrespect towards staff and centre members. While it’s not a step we’ve taken lightly, the well-being of our young people, staff, and wider community must come first.
“We’re incredibly grateful to those who consistently show kindness, respect, and positivity — your presence makes a real difference. We kindly ask parents, carers, and young people to understand that this temporary pause is necessary to help us reset and maintain a safe space for all.”
At the time, the Ashgill Steering Group shared the post, writing that some kids had threatened ‘other users and staff’, set off fire alarms and entered the building when banned. They added: “Due to the behaviour of some kids, threatening other users, staff, setting fire alarms off … sneaking into building when banned … the list goes on … it’s the same group of boys causing the grief as before
“Parents are being contacted of the ones the centre have forms for … if anyone has info on the other culprits .. you can contact The Ashgill Recreation Centre – ARC directly any help to stop this asap and get services up and running again will be appreciated … it’s not fair on the kids who do behave.”
Now, in the latest incident, locals say that kids were ‘throwing fireworks at people and the traffic’.
One person said: “The staff are under serious pressure from the teenagers and their behaviour, and it’s actually putting other children off attending who don’t cause disruption and just want somewhere to go that’s safe and off the streets. It’s sad we can’t have this on our doorsteps.
“(The children are) setting fireworks off and throwing them at cars in broad daylight.”
A parent of one of the children who attends the centre added: “My kids came out on Tuesday night from gymnastics, and the kids were walking past with massive fireworks. They were scaring the kids. The other week, the police were there when I was in, and the kids just didn’t care that they were there. They are drunk and causing all sorts of trouble. It’s a joke.
“I totally feel for the people that work in there.”
Police say that three youngsters have been identified in connection with the disorder and will be reported to the Scottish Children’s Reporter.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Following a recent report of antisocial behaviour in the Ashgill Road area of Glasgow, three male youths have been identified in connection. A report will be submitted to the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration.
“Officers continue to carry out regular patrols of the area as a deterrent and anyone with information about those involved should contact police. We’re also working with our partners to address the concerns.”
Glasgow City Council have been contacted for comment.
