A city centre venue set up to celebrate “all things geek-culture related” is closing after over a decade of serving fans.
Geek Retreat, on Union Street, took to social media to reveal they are saying goodbye after 12 years in the city. The board and card game cafe, which was popular for fans of Dungeons and Dragons, Pokémon cards, Magic the Gathering and Warhammer 40K, moved across the road from their original basement premises in 2023.
Now, they are closing their city centre base for the final time, writing on social media: “After 12 incredible years in Glasgow, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our store.
“Earlier this year we put the business up for sale as part of a wider plan to simplify and focus on franchise-led growth.
“While there was strong interest, several sale processes fell through due to funding complexities, and the landlord has now re-let the site.”
The team asked people to be respectful in this trying time and thanked all the fans and customers who have come to them over the years.
They added: “We’re hugely grateful to everyone who’s supported us over the years – the team have worked with so much care to make this a welcoming space for the local communities. We know this news is disappointing. Please keep any comments respectful – many people have put their heart and energy into this store over the years.”
After their final weekend there (September 27 and 28), the team are now preparing the venue for hand over back to the owners.
Disappointed fans looking to carry on gaming can head to the Merchant City where they will find the newly launched Merchant’s Guild, the Saltmarket for R-Cade, St Vincent Street for Vlad’s Emporium, and up on Sauchiehall Street, where they have Top Hat and Bishop. Further out in Shawlands, there is also the excellent Settlers.
