Glamorous wife of powerful attorney acted like queen of the road in enormous SUV moments before smash that left woman, 20, in vegetative state

The wife of a prominent Oklahoma attorney drunkenly tore through a quiet neighborhood in her massive SUV, crashing violently and coming within inches of killing a young woman.

Sara Polston, 43, wife of renowned local tax attorney Rod Polston, was arrested in February 2023 after barreling through a Norman neighborhood in her massive Cadillac Escalade and striking 20-year-old Micaela Borrego, according to KFOR News.

At the scene, authorities measured Polston’s blood alcohol content at 0.158 percent – almost twice the legal limit, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet.

Court documents further alleged that the wealthy mother tested positive for marijuana at the time of the near-fatal crash.

While she regained her freedom in less than 24 hours, Borrego remained in critical condition – locked in a weeks-long coma that would ultimately rob her of the ability to speak, eat and walk.

On Wednesday, Polston pleaded guilty to the wreck that left the young woman fighting for her life over for more than two years, according to KFOR News.

‘Imagine seeing something happening to someone you love more than anything in the world,’ Noble McIntyre, who represents Borrego, told the outlet in July 2023.

‘And then seeing that person that caused that pain and suffering seemingly enjoying their life,’ she added.

On February 7, 2023, Polston was en route to pick up her children when she made a stop at a liquor store along the way, according to the affidavit.

From there, she headed towards the school, allegedly blowing through several stop signs, and colliding with Borrego at the fourth.

Moments before impact, a neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera recorded the black SUV tearing down the rainy street, blowing through stop signs as it charged toward the intersection.

Just seconds after the car vanished from view, a loud bang shattered the quiet neighborhood – followed by an even deeper silence.

‘This wasn’t one bad decision, this was a series of bad decisions,’ McIntyre told the outlet months after the crash.

‘This was drinking earlier in the day and then making the decision to leave and drive,’ she added. ‘It was making the decision to blow past all those stop signs.’

Borrego was rushed to OU Health University of Oklahoma Medical Center, where she suffered a stroke shortly after arrival, according to a GoFundMe page created by the family.

Although her vitals stabilized the next day, Borrego remained unresponsive in a coma – reliant on a ventilator – and was treated with blood thinners to prevent another stroke while also recovering from a broken pelvis.

By March 5, the 20-year-old was still in a coma, though she had begun showing subtle responses to sights, sounds and smells, according to an update from the family.

Over the following weeks, Borrego began to miraculously show signs of rapid improvement, and by March 14, she had been weaned from the tracheostomy and all monitors except for those tracking her heart and oxygen levels.

She was transferred to a long-term care facility, where she embarked on the challenging path of physical, occupational and speech therapy to relearn the basics of daily life.

But it was here that Borrego’s family said that she was given only a 5 percent chance of returning to the person she had been before the wreck.

Borrego persisted, and less than a month later, she was officially reclassified from a vegetative state to a minimally conscious one – gradually becoming more aware with each passing day.

She began moving her upper legs and torso and could even hum during conversations. Her sense of humor reappeared, as she would physically respond to funny moments with her visitors.

Throughout her recovery, Borrego’s mother, Krista, frequently shared videos and photos on Facebook documenting her post-accident milestones, including attempts to relearn walking, eating and speaking.

‘She’s fighting so hard to get her life back and SHE WILL!!!!!’ Krista wrote in Borrego’s four month update.

Officials initially issued a $100,000 felony arrest warrant for Polston in connection with the crash, but she turned herself in on June 14, 2023, and posted bond shortly thereafter.

That July, Borrego’s family finally shared the long-awaited announcement that had remained uncertain for months: she would soon be going home and continuing treatment at an outpatient facility.

‘In our recent visits she has been able to communicate with us through text-to-speech apps and gestures,’ her loved ones shared on GoFundMe.

‘Her progress, resilience, and strength has been so impressive through this time in her life; and still is!!’

Polston pleaded guilty Wednesday afternoon and is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
