A three year old girl from Lancashire has died after falling into a hotel swimming pool during a family holiday in Greece. The tragedy happened in Lardos, a coastal resort village on the island of Rhodes, on October 14. The child, known only as Matilda, was allegedly left unsupervised while on holiday with her family. Matilda, who was from Blackpool , was discovered unconscious at the bottom of the pool within the hotel complex. A British doctor, who happened to be nearby, performed CPR until paramedics arrived. She was swiftly taken to the General Hospital of Rhodes where she was intubated before being transferred to Crete and later airlifted back to England. Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff, Matilda died after 12 days in hospital. They, along with the 57 year old hotel owner and the hotel's director, are now facing charges related to the child's death, according to the Mirror . An investigation conducted on-site revealed that safety measures at the hotel were severely lacking, with no lifeguard on duty, no rescue equipment at the specific pool and no designated supervisor present, reports suggest. Antonis Zervos, the solicitor representing the child's uncle, has maintained that his client "did not see and was not near the child". The hotel manager's lawyer has meanwhile claimed the pool is not big enough to legally require a lifeguard be present. Police have reviewed CCTV footage to determine the circumstances of the incident. They say their investigation is ongoing. A woman who was lying on a sunbed spotted her and pulled her out before sounding the alarm. A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesman told LancsLive : "We are supporting the family of a British child following an incident in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities."
