While fans argue over whether Russell Wilson or first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart should start for the New York Giants following the team’s 0-3 start, the Giants’ old quarterback is “as good as it gets” in the NFL right now, according to his new head coach.
Seven-year NFL veteran quarterback Daniel Jones was much-maligned and unappreciated in New York, where he spent six seasons after being drafted sixth overall by the franchise in 2019. However, Jones appears to have found an ideal environment for his skillset to flourish in Indianapolis.
“You’ve got a guy that’s the signal-caller back there that studies his tail off, looks at tape all day every day, grinding, looking at different things, knowing the checks, understanding what we’re trying to get done offensively, getting us in and out of the right plays,” Colts coach Shane Steichen said, via Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. “That stuff pays huge dividends in this league, because there’s a lot going on. Obviously, this is one of the toughest positions in all of sports to play, and he’s doing it right now as good as it gets.”
In Indianapolis, Jones is playing with confidence in a system designed to simplify his reads. He also benefits from excellent pass protection, and a coaching staff that has structured its offense to maximize Jones’ talents.
Through three games this season, Jones has demonstrated increased efficiency and consistency, achieving a career-high yards-per-attempt average while leading the Colts to their first 3-0 start since 2009 — a stark contrast to his struggles with the New York Giants, who clearly, are still struggling.
In 2025, Jones has thrown for 816 yards and three touchdowns while completing 72 percent of his passes, in addition to three rushing touchdowns. He has yet to throw an interception.
Jones’ passer rating is 111.7, placing him third in the league behind quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Geno Smith.
Jones was released by the Giants last November after being benched in favor of Tommy DeVito. The Colts signed Jones in March.
