Kaieteur Sports – As the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) enters the final quarter of its calendar, the nation’s top junior blueliners are set to take center stage in what promises to be a thrilling week of hockey action. The National Junior Hockey Tournament bullies off today, September 16, and runs through September 21, hosted at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.

This annual tournament is the premier stage for rising hockey talent in Guyana, with matches scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM on weekdays and 10:00 AM over the weekend. The event will feature high-intensity matchups across three divisions: Under-13 (mixed), Under-17, and Under-21 (male and female).

In a generous show of support, Sunshine Snacks and Igloo Ice-Cream have returned as co-sponsors, reinforcing their commitment to youth development through sport and community involvement.

“The energy around this tournament is always electric. It’s more than just hockey—it’s about building character, discipline, and national pride from a young age,” said a GHB official. “We’re excited to welcome fans and families to witness the future of Guyanese hockey in action.”

According to the latest figures from the organising committee, over 20 teams are expected to compete this year. Current registration includes 10 Under-13 teams, 8 Under-17 teams, and 5 Under-21 teams, showcasing a strong turnout across all categories.

The Under-13 division, which features players as young as seven, remains a cornerstone of the tournament. The GHB emphasizes this age group as vital to building confidence, nurturing talent, and laying the foundation for long-term growth in the sport.

Several athletes in this year’s tournament have already donned the national colours, representing Guyana at both Junior and Senior levels. Their presence offers inspiration and a valuable benchmark for peers and younger players looking to follow in their footsteps.

Adding to the excitement, senior national teams will take the court each night after the junior matches as part of their build-up to the upcoming National Senior Tournament and the prestigious Diamond Mineral Water International Hockey Festival, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Fans, families, and hockey lovers are encouraged to come out and support the stars of tomorrow as they battle for championship glory and a place in Guyana’s hockey history.
