Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana’s embassy in Iran will fully reopen on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, after being closed for three months due to regional tensions.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, September 15, 2025, Mr Ablakwa explained that the decision follows swift diplomatic and logistical interventions by his ministry to protect Ghanaians in the Middle East during the recent conflict between Iran and Israel.
He revealed that the ministry successfully evacuated 17 Ghanaian citizens from the affected region, describing the operation as proof of Ghana’s capacity to respond rapidly to global crises. “This operation is another testament of our capacity for rapid response in times of global uncertainty,” he said.
Mr Ablakwa added that adequate security measures have now been put in place to guarantee the safety of Ghana’s diplomatic staff in Iran. He assured that the ministry will continue to monitor international developments closely and act decisively whenever the safety of Ghanaians and foreign service officers is at risk.
The minister also outlined new measures to support Ghanaians abroad, including the establishment of student help desks in 11 diplomatic missions with large student populations. These desks, staffed by reassigned consular officers, will provide emergency aid, immigration guidance, and other forms of support.
In addition, he highlighted Ghana’s commitment to educational diplomacy, announcing the implementation of 1,000 scholarships for students from ECOWAS member states to study in Ghana. He added that approximately 1,500 scholarships have also been secured from 15 partner countries for Ghanaian citizens in various fields of study.
Mr Ablakwa said all scholarship opportunities negotiated by the ministry will be published on the ministry’s website from October 1, 2025, to ensure transparency and accessibility.
