Ghana to tighten passport acquisition to block criminal exploitation

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hinted at plans by his ministry to tighten passport acquisition processes. According to him, the planned process is intended to protect the country’s diplomatic gains and eliminate fraudulent individuals using Ghanaian passports to engage in criminal activities. US Embassy breaks silence after Ablakwa announced reversal of visa restrictions on Ghana The minister made this known in a Facebook post on Saturday, September 27, 2025, in response to the US Embassy in Ghana’s public confirmation of the reversal of an earlier visa restriction imposed on the country. “Ghana is also set to tighten our passport acquisition controls to prevent unscrupulous elements from undermining recent diplomatic gains in new visa regimes and visa waiver agreements with multiple countries,” he wrote. Ablakwa added that his ministry will continue discussions with the US on new tariffs and other key issues, while assuring the public of the ministry’s dedication and commitment.
