Ghana to receive €65 million from Germany to boost energy transition and economy

The German government has announced plans to commit €65 million (approximately GH¢820 million) in new development assistance to Ghana, pending approval by the German Bundestag. Speaking during a three-day visit to Ghana, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the initiative underscores his country’s longstanding partnership with Ghana, which spans several decades. “We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of development cooperation between Ghana and Germany. Together, we are laying the foundation for sustainable economic development that will benefit both countries,” President Steinmeier said. Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith urges American investors to partner Ghana He noted that the funding process will be finalised by the end of November 2025, with a strong focus on energy transition, particularly enhancing energy efficiency and expanding renewable power sources to drive sustainable growth and unlock key trade and investment opportunities. “Our trade volume has grown by more than a quarter to €626 million last year. But there is much more potential that remains untapped,” he added. For his part, President John Dramani Mahama said discussions centered on expanding investment opportunities under Ghana’s Resetting Ghana Agenda, which aims to restore macroeconomic stability, rebuild investor confidence, and attract foreign investment. “We are making tangible progress on our agenda. Ghana remains committed to creating an enabling environment to attract German private sector investment, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” President Mahama noted.
