The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has highlighted Ghana’s progress in expanding electricity access and promoting cleaner energy solutions at the recently concluded Paris Peace Forum. According to him, Ghana’s electricity coverage has reached an impressive 89.03%, comprising 98% coverage in urban areas and 77% in rural communities. In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, as cited by GhanaWeb Business, Ablakwa lamented the inequalities in energy access across Africa, noting that 85% of the world’s estimated 645 million people without electricity live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Experts urge efficiency, renewables to tackle US$3.1 billion energy sector debt He referenced the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as an example, where only 21% of the population, and just 2% in rural areas, have access to electricity, despite the country’s vast energy resources. “It is unacceptable that 85% of the world’s estimated 645 million people without electricity are in Sub-Saharan Africa. For example, the DRC’s national electricity coverage is 21%, and only 2% of rural communities in the DRC have electricity, despite having more energy resources than Ghana,” he stated. Ablakwa added that despite current challenges, Ghana is on track to achieve universal electricity access (100%) by 2030. He further emphasised the government’s commitment to increasing Ghana’s renewable energy capacity within the same timeframe. “We are also making the right climate change investments to increase our renewable energy capacity from 4% to 10% by 2030, and by distributing 1 million more clean cookstoves,” he added. I shared Ghana’s success story at the Paris Peace Forum on how our home-grown solutions and international partnerships such as the Global Energy Alliance, Sollar Alliance and Better Planet Initiative have made Ghana an African leader in combating energy poverty and meeting SDG 7.… pic.twitter.com/OP0E3i395K — Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa (@S_OkudzetoAblak) November 1, 2025 All you need to know about Ghana’s new vehicle number plates | BizTech
