A security analyst, Andrews Asiedu Tetteh, has cautioned Ghana, particularly the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to tread cautiously on how it reacts to the Palestinian issue.
He indicated that what is currently happening is a trigger that can cause a global crisis, and Ghana must tread with caution so it doesn’t get caught up in the crossfire.
Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal have all recognized a Palestinian state.
The decision by these countries follows the ongoing Gaza war and is intended to promote a two-state solution, prompting a furious response from Israel.
Israel has, however, fired back, criticizing these countries and warning that it would not entertain what they have done.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reacting to this, said: “I have a clear message to those leaders who recognise a Palestinian state after the horrific massacre of October 7: You are giving a huge reward to terrorism,” he said, referring to Palestinian militant group Hamas’ 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the nearly two-year war in Gaza. “And I have another message for you: It will not happen. A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River.”
Andrews Asiedu Tetteh posited that what is happening could lead to the Third World War if the situation is not properly managed.
He advised that Ghana must concentrate on dealing with its own internal security crisis in Bawku and other areas.
He posited on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that if we have not dealt with the Bawku and other conflicts in Ghana which have caused our citizens to seek refuge in other countries, we have no business meddling in the Palestinian and Israeli saga.
He said this in response to a question on the security implications for Ghana for providing aid to Palestine.
“One of the challenges confronting our leaders is that we don’t know when to shut up or mind our own business. To be brief about this, we have a serious crisis going on in Bawku, Bole Bamboi, and other communities. We have serious hunger and other challenges confronting us that we have to focus on addressing. This is not a matter we have to meddle in. This would cause diplomatic issues, and so such an action is highly unnecessary.
The majority of Ghanaians must rise and let the government know that we don’t want any ripple effects from meddling in the Palestine and Israel conflict. What is going on is a challenge, and several experts have predicted the third world war, and so I am one of those who believe that what is happening can bring about the third world war. The position taken by the UK, France, and the other countries has serious effects, and so I will admonish the Foreign Affairs Minister not to meddle in these issues. It is a slippery ground we do not want to walk. We should focus on dealing with our challenges.”
