Ghana Medical Trust Fund to partner with NLA to boost healthcare delivery

Ghana’s National Lottery Authority (NLA) will partner with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to support regional and teaching hospitals with essential medical equipment, the authorities said on Wednesday. The move comes amid concerns over inadequate diagnostic and treatment facilities across the country’s hospitals, including shortages of MRI and CT scan machines, dialysis units, and breast screening equipment. Obuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, said a recent needs assessment of six teaching hospitals and ten regional hospitals revealed “significant gaps in equipment and infrastructure that require urgent attention.” “Our health facilities are on their knees, and we can no longer pretend about it. When you visit some of these hospitals, you leave wondering how our healthcare system is surviving. “The Government alone cannot carry the burden. We are inviting corporate institutions to partner with us in retooling our hospitals so that together we can make a lasting difference,” she said. Darko-Opoku urged the NLA to support specific hospital projects through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, highlighting the potential long-term impact on healthcare delivery. Responding, NLA Director-General Mohammed Abdul-Salam commended the Ghana Medical Trust Fund and pledged the Authority’s commitment to collaborate. “I believe strongly that if we treat healthcare funding as a shared responsibility, we can achieve great things together. The idea of supporting the Ghana Medical Trust Fund aligns perfectly with our CSR objectives. We could even consider adopting one project at a time and see it through to completion,” Abdul-Salam said. He added that such partnerships reinforce the broader national agenda of using lottery proceeds to support public welfare initiatives. Deputy Director-General of NLA, Eric Yeboah Wadie, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration and reiterated the Authority’s readiness to back initiatives that positively impact society. The Ghana Medical Trust Fund and NLA aim to jointly improve healthcare delivery, ensuring hospitals receive critical support and contributing to the well-being of Ghanaians nationwide.
