Ghana Medical Trust Fund boss commends NHIA for transformative leadership in health financing

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Secretariat, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has lauded the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for its transformative leadership in advancing equitable and people-centred healthcare across Ghana. He gave the commendation during the opening ceremony of the NHIA’s maiden Stakeholder Conference held at the Alisa Hotel, Accra on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The two day conference was themed, “Consolidating Strategic Partnerships for a Resilient and Inclusive Health Insurance Scheme.” It brought together stakeholders in the health sector from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana, World Health Organization (WHO), Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, policymakers, traditional leaders, NHIA staff, and directors. Madam Darko-Opoku also praised the NHIA for its continued commitment to strengthening Ghana’s health financing architecture. She described the Authority’s achievements under the leadership of Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe as “purposeful and people-centred.” “It is a privilege to stand here on behalf of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to salute the National Health Insurance Authority for its continued leadership in shaping an equitable healthcare system for all Ghanaians,” she stated, commending Dr. Bampoe and his deputies for reforms that are “transforming the country’s health financing landscape.” Madam Darko-Opoku revealed that during her team’s Hospital Needs Assessment Tour across the country, she personally witnessed the impact of NHIA’s work on the ground. “Hospital administrators across the country have consistently commended the Authority for its timely re-investments—an initiative that has brought real relief to healthcare providers,” she noted, adding that such initiatives are “powerful victories that sustain confidence in our national health system and restore pride in public service.” Appreciation She also expressed profound appreciation to Dr. Bampoe for the NHIA’s support toward the establishment and operationalization of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, emphasizing that his open and collaborative leadership has been instrumental in the Fund’s early successes. “Dr. Bampoe, allow me to acknowledge you personally, not only for your transformative leadership at the NHIA, but also for the immense support you have extended to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund from its very inception,” she said. “Your guidance, openness, and confidence in our mission, particularly through the staff you have graciously seconded to assist us in our establishment and operations, have made a tremendous difference,” she added. Reaffirming the Fund’s commitment to partnership, Madam Darko-Opoku underscored the importance of collaboration between the NHIA and the Trust Fund in tackling emerging health challenges, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs). “The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is here to support and complement the solid foundation the Authority has laid. Our mission is to stand shoulder to shoulder with you—especially as we confront the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases. Together, we share one goal: that no Ghanaian is left behind in the pursuit of quality healthcare,” she noted. Collaboration She further stressed the need for sustained collaboration in building a more equitable, resilient, and compassionate healthcare system, calling the NHIA “living proof that when leadership meets vision, institutions thrive and citizens benefit.” “As we look ahead, we see endless opportunities to collaborate, align our strengths, and build a system that is equitable, resilient, and compassionate. Where the NHIS ends, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund begins. Together, we will continue to make healthcare in Ghana stronger, fairer, and more inclusive—because truly, Mahama cares,” she further indicated. The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, established to complement the work of the NHIA, aims to bridge healthcare funding gaps, enhance medical infrastructure, and ensure that quality healthcare reaches all corners of the country.
