GEORGETOWN – Incoming Member of Parliament Sharma Solomon has issued a fiery condemnation of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), demanding an immediate end to what he calls the continuous “victimization” of small and medium-scale miners. Solomon claimed that the regulatory body is exhibiting a “troubling pattern” of selective enforcement and bias, allegedly favoring larger operators over the everyday miner. He asserted that the persistent complaints from small miners signal that the GGMC must be urgently reined in. Solomon stressed that the development of Guyana’s crucial mining sector, which provides livelihoods for thousands, must not be driven by “favoritism or selective enforcement,” but by equitable policies that empower the “Small Man.” The GGMC’s Troubling Reversals Solomon pointed to specific, recent instances that he claimed prove apparent bias within the Commission. He highlighted cases where GGMC’s own appointed adjudicators appear to be reversing decisions that were previously made in favor of small miners. This issue has been a long-standing source of contention, with critics arguing that the GGMC has historically been slow to allocate valuable abandoned claims to small miners, often preferring to deal with larger, more established companies. The politician specifically called on the Ministry of Natural Resources to intervene immediately, asserting that the matter must be handled transparently and in full accordance with established regulations. Solomon concluded that justice and equity are essential, and that small miners deserve a regulatory body focused on protecting livelihoods and the environment, not serving as a tool for allegedly corrupt or biased interests.
