GGA Expands Golf in Schools with Donation to Region 1

The Guyana Golf Association (GGA) and Nexgen Golf Academy have strengthened their ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Education through the donation of golf equipment and balls to Baramita, Region 1.

This initiative supports Minister of Education Sonia Parag’s mandate to place greater emphasis on Physical Education (PE) in schools every Friday, with the intention that golf be included as a key activity.

Launched in 2021, the secondary school golf programme has grown rapidly and is now active in secondary schools across 9 of Guyana’s 10 regions.

This expansion has been made possible through donations of equipment, balls, and training by the Guyana Golf Association and Nexgen Golf Academy.

Mr. Kurt Braithwaite presented the equipment on behalf of GGA president Aleem Hussain to teachers and students in Baramita where he also conducted an introductory training session on the principles of golf.

Mr. Braithwaite noted that the visit formed part of a wider programme, planned since June 2025, aimed at exposing students and teachers to various sports, physical education methods, and teaching strategies.

“Another objective is to enhance the delivery of the PE programme at the nursery, primary, and secondary levels, especially since the teaching staff is very young. The goal is to have PE fully developed in two years’ time, hence the option to add golf to the other sports offered,” He explained.

According to Hussain, “It was through the collaboration with the Allied Arts Unit that golf was introduced into the school system in 2021, beginning with a ‘Train the Trainers’ programme that prepared over 155 PE teachers to deliver golf instruction”.

“Over the past three years, thousands of students have been given the opportunity to experience golf with more than 700 choosing golf as their CSEC Physical Education elective, signaling the sport’s growing popularity among young people. Golf is now gaining recognition alongside traditional disciplines such as cricket, football, and basketball.” Hussain added.

With growing interest from both students and educators, the GGA is now focused on expanding access to training facilities, such as the Nexgen Golf Academy in Georgetown and the Westside Golf Course in Vreed-en-Hoop, to further support the development of the sport across Guyana. (Clifton Ross)
