Germany commits €65 million to deepen development cooperation with Ghana

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has announced that Germany will commit over €65 million (approximately GH₵820 million) in new development assistance to Ghana, pending approval by the German Bundestag. Speaking in Accra during his three-day state visit, President Steinmeier said the renewed financial commitment underscores Germany’s “longstanding and close partnership” with Ghana, which has spanned over five decades since independence. “We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of development cooperation between Ghana and Germany,” Steinmeier said. “Together, we are laying the foundation for sustainable economic development that will benefit both countries.” The German leader noted that the new package will focus on education, renewable energy, youth employment, and technical skills training, adding that details will be finalised by the end of this month. He emphasised Germany’s growing interest in supporting Ghana’s energy transition, particularly in enhancing energy efficiency and expanding renewable power sources to drive sustainable growth. Steinmeier also highlighted Ghana’s position as a “hub for West Africa” and praised its skilled, English-speaking workforce and political stability as key advantages that make the country “an ideal partner” for trade and investment. “Our trade volume has grown by more than a quarter to €626 million last year,” he said. “But there is much more potential that remains untapped.” A large delegation of German business leaders accompanied Steinmeier to Ghana, representing sectors such as infrastructure, high-tech medicine, and satellite development, with the goal of exploring joint ventures under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
