Gennie Dean Cancer Support Group marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month with island-wide outreach

From classrooms to corporate offices and even virtual spaces, the Gennie Dean Caring and Sharing Cancer Support Group spent October spreading one consistent message wherever they could be heard: education and early detection saves lives. Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the non-profit organization reached hundreds across New Providence through a series of educational talks, wellness initiatives, and community collaborations encouraging Bahamians to learn about breast cancer, know their risk, and adopt a healthy lifestyle including regular self-checks and screening. In the span of just a few weeks, members of the group presented at an Elizabeth constituency meeting, Nassau Cruise Port, Abundant Life Retirees, DHL, JTC Private Trust (Bahamas) Ltd, and St. John’s College. Each session was tailored to meet the audience where they were, framing medical facts with survivor stories and practical steps for prevention and early detection. Through its network of health professionals, survivors, and volunteers, Gennie Dean hosts support groups, wellness workshops, educational seminars, and social events all geared at spreading the word on breast cancer and the importance of screening for women of all ages. With even young women now being affected by the disease, Gennie Dean has made it their mission to take breast cancer education into every space where women can be found. This year, their message extended beyond physical spaces. The Gennie Dean team hosted a virtual awareness session with Bahamasair staff and joined Bahamas Power and Light for an Instagram Live event. President Duquessa Dean also represented the organization on a Toastmasters panel discussion, highlighting the power of voice and community in the fight against breast cancer. Coupling education with activism and underscoring their commitment to holistic wellness, Gennie Dean also partnered in a community blood drive – a reminder that fighting cancer requires not just awareness, but action. They also made a poignant stop at the Memorial Wall at Urban Renewal, a site dedicated to honoring those who have lost their lives to cancer while inspiring those still fighting to keep pressing forward. The wall serves as both a tribute and a symbol of unity in the ongoing battle against the disease. Although Breast Cancer Awareness Month is at its close, the work for Gennie Dean and similar organizations continues as every day more Bahamians are diagnosed and in need of support.
