GCC sector now has a Indian flavour: Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the country’s GCC (Global Capability Centres) sector has acquired a distinct ‘Indian flavour’, with an impressive 50 per cent of all global GCCs operating in India and over half of the professionals in GCCs outside of India being of Indian origin.

Addressing the CII-GCC Business Summit in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, she said that the government’s policy-led leadership was aimed at creating a facilitative environment for GCCs. She emphasised that this support extends beyond fiscal measures, focusing instead on fostering a robust ecosystem.

She outlined three core pillars for India’s GCC growth – investments in physical and digital infrastructure; education and skilling; and facilitative governance.

Infrastructure front

On the infrastructure front, Sitharaman said that capital investment has increased from 1.7 per cent of GDP in 2013-14 to 4.1 per cent in 2024-25.

“This has led to the operationalisation of 88 new airports, 31,000 km of new rail tracks, and a 60 per cent expansion of the national highway network,” she said.

She said that the Central government’s provision of ₹3.6 lakh crore in 50-year interest-free loans to States would boost their capital asset creation.

On education and skilling, she said that the PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana trained over 1.6 crore people, and the PM Internship Scheme was aimed at linking young talent with job opportunities.

Ease of doing business

Stating that governance reforms had enhanced the ease of doing business in the country, she said the government removed over 42,000 unnecessary compliances and 1,500 archaic laws. “The recent next-generation GST reforms are also set to benefit the tech industry by easing compliance and reducing disputes,” a statement said here on Wednesday.
