Gavin Newsom has said “anti-woke” is nothing more than “anti-Black”, and charged the Trump administration with “putting America in reverse”. The Democratic governor of California aired his thoughts on the All the Smoke podcast, saying: “I can’t take what’s going on. “It’s not even about Democrats versus Republicans, it’s about this country and what we stand for. They’re putting America in reverse, to a pre-1960s world. You’ve got the Supreme Court talking about getting rid of the Voting Rights Act, that may happen in just a matter of months. “They’re rewriting history, censoring historical facts. It’s an unbelievable moment. All this anti-woke stuff is just anti-Black,” he continued, referring to the administration’s targeting of critical race theory, the business framework of environment, social and governance, and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as part of a “great purge” that was happening in real time. The battle was between “daylight and darkness”, he said. @gavinnewsom Trump is literally putting America in reverse. It’s time to wake up. @All The Smoke ♬ original sound – Gavin Newsom Last month, the government was ordered to restore webpages on gender identity and DEI, as part of a court settlement, with district court judge Lauren King ordering the Department of Health and Human Services to reinstate hundreds of pages that had been removed from government websites under orders from the president. Nine medical organisations and public health not-for-profit groups sued the government after Trump issued an executive order in January directing the health department to remove pages containing information on gender identity, HIV prevention and health advice for marginalised groups. Newsom has previously been a staunch supporter of trans and wider LGBTQ+ rights, having criticised drag bans, signed protections for LGBTQ+ youngsters into law and called out Florida governor Ron DeSantis for “demeaning” the community. He’s recently started trolling Trump on social media, labelling the president “unhinged”, “in decline” and in need of “an intervention”. However, he has been criticised for what appeared to be a U-turn on his support for trans people as calls grew from him to declare himself a candidate for the presidency. What has Gavin Newsom said about running for president? At the weekend, Newsom told CBS News Sunday Morning that will decide whether to run once the 2026 midterm elections are over, admitting that he was giving serious thought to a bid for the White House. His term in California ends in January 2027 and he is prevented from running again by law. The presidency comes up for grabs again in 2028 but the governor cautioned that any decision is a long way off. Share your thoughts!
