Last night, Governor of California Gavin Newsom stopped by the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he opened up about his communication strategy — specifically, his many, many, many viral tweets.
In case you’ve missed his posts, Newsom has been sharing all caps rants like this:
Calling out the “fake news”:

And giving people nicknames in a way that all seems…familiar:
Colbert asked Newsom how he got the idea to satirize a certain someone’s signature social media style, and Newsom replied, “Everything we were doing to try to break through wasn’t working anymore, and so we decided to do something — and you’re right, to your point — novel, called ‘humor.'”
“And I gotta say, oftentimes Democrats, we’re a little — we’re not as humorous as we should be.”
He went on to say, “I never imagined it would break through like it has and get under the skin of the president of the United States and some of my ‘friends’…on Fox.”
Colbert then ran a clip of a Fox News personality criticizing Newsom’s tweets, and Newsom said they were “outraged, offended, disgusted because we put a mirror up to Trump and the absurdity of what’s going on in this country, the absurdity of Donald Trump, and the absurdity of these networks playing into it.”
Next, Colbert asked Newsom why he thinks these posts are resonating so much with people, and he said, “Just the fight. It’s been a tough time, a lot of anxiety, a lot of stress, a lot of folks that honestly just don’t know if we’re gonna get our country back.”
“This guy is flooding the zone. He’s dominating the narratives. Facts don’t seem to matter, and Democrats, frankly, have had a difficult time pushing back… There’s sort of this weakness that dominates our brand in our party, and I think what people appreciate is that we’re willing to fight. And not only fight symbolically by having a little bit of fun, but fight substantively. We have 41 lawsuits against this son of a bitch.”
Commenters are calling Newsom’s take “refreshing”:
And they’re happy to see someone pushing back:
Another commenter wrote, “We can not sit idly by while Democracy and innocent people are being attacked.”
And another wrote, “Newsom has found his second wind. He is surging and I appreciate a Democrat showing some spine for a change.”
