FROM noon on Friday, October 24, to Sunday, October 26, Garrucha became the centre of gastronomic attention in the whole of Almeria, with its famed and highly-anticipated Garrucha Red Prawn Gastronomic Festival. The event, which has become a marker of the autumn season in the lively town, saw countless visitors stop by Garrucha’s port to taste some of the hundreds of savoury kilos of Garrucha red prawns, arranged in mouth-watering tapas and dishes. Thousands of visitors flock to Garrucha Local restaurateurs and talented chefs whipped up incredible meals at the Festival with one of the province’s star products. Local gourmet brand, Sabores Almeria, was also prominent at the festival. Thousands of visitors from Almeria and other provinces across Spain came to enjoy the delicious treats and marvel at Garrucha’s gastronomy. The tastings were affordable and popular, with hungry visitors lined up to try the vibrantly-coloured treat from the sea. The event didn’t only include treats for foodies, however. The festival also offered a fun-filled programme of activities for all audiences, including children’s activities and a playroom and live music by talented local artists including The Freedom Band, Los Lagartos, and Elegante y Embustero. Garrucha Red Prawns: ‘exquisite,’ a source of ‘pride,’ and ‘a culinary treasure’ Provincial deputy Esther Álvarez, who attended the opening ceremony on Friday, stated, “Each edition of this festival reaffirms an idea we all share: Garrucha Red Prawns are not only an exquisite product, but also an ambassador of our land.” Mayor of Garrucha, Pedro Zamora, said, “This festival is a collective celebration that unites residents, businesses, and visitors around our most emblematic product. Garrucha Red Prawns represent pride, identity, and the future. Juan José Alonso, the Provincial Delegate for Tourism, Culture, and Sport of the Regional Government, stated that the province “has a culinary treasure based on the richness of its raw materials,” in which “the red prawn occupies a place of honour […] thanks to it, our chefs can offer first-class cuisine.” Garrucha, once more a hub for ‘first-class cuisine’ All in all, the event was a golden opportunity for visitors and residents in Garrucha to savour some of its first-class cuisine, in a festive and fun-filled environment. The Garrucha Red Prawn Gastronomic Festival made for a festive three days in the municipality, and left visitors with their stomachs satisfied, but looking forward to next year’s edition.
