Garifunaduou Takes Center Stage at High School Battle of the Drums October is officially behind us, and what better way to welcome November than with some serious rhythm and energy. The Thirteenth Annual High School Battle of the Drums lit up the Belize City Civic Center, bringing together seven talented schools from across the southern districts and the Belize District. The competition was fierce, the beats were electric, and the crowd? Absolutely loving it! Let’s take you inside the action with some sights, sounds, and a few words from the passionate participants who made this night unforgettable. Darius Avila, President, Battle of the Drums “It is very significant because it helps to retrieve and keep the Garifuna culture in the high school system. It helps us to bring out new Garifuna drummers and singers. It enhances cultural diversity. In the school system we have not only Garifuna students but a whole lot of different cultures.” Terence Lewis, Student, Ladyville Technical Highschool “I feel kind of nervous because this is my first time being out here.” Kayden Sanchez, Student, Ladyville Technical Highschool “I feel nervous, happy excited and I want to do it again.” Shanthon Sankey, Student, Ladyville Technical Highschool “For me, I just have the experience, because this is my second time in here, but I just came for enjoyment and the culture because I have a love for it.
