About 80 National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers at Government Moyan Model Girls Higher Secondary School here found themselves moved to tears as they listened to the life story of Ganesh Kailas, a differently abled motivational speaker and life coach from Ottappalam, during a session on Wednesday.
Sharing the challenges he faced, Mr. Kailas spoke about the accident that had left him with a severe spinal injury 19 years ago and how it changed his life. He urged the students to never give up, no matter what life threw their way, inspiring them with his own story of resilience.
“I had my sights set on becoming a police sub-inspector and was eagerly waiting for the results when life took an unexpected turn: the 2006 accident left me crippled. But I did not let it hold me back. In a remarkable turn of events, I ended up motivating a room full of police sub-inspectors, a testament to my resilience,” he said as the girls erupted into applause.
Drawing inspiration from the lives of prominent figures, Mr. Kailas shared a powerful message with the students: there is more to life than wealth. “Do not get so caught up in making money that you forget to live,” he cautioned, urging them to appreciate the things that truly matter.
Story of Femi Otedola
He told the story of Femi Otedola, an African businessman who changed after donating 200 wheelchairs to disabled kids at a friend’s request. Seeing their joy, Otedola was moved. As he left, a kid hugged his legs and asked him to be remembered in heaven. “That moment changed Otedola’s outlook on life,” he said.
Mr. Kailas, who has inspired thousands through over 1,400 motivational sessions in Kerala and neighbouring States, credited his father, Sankaran Kutty, a retired sub-inspector, as his hero. “Look up to your parents, not celebrities,” he advised the students, pointing out the selfless sacrifices parents make for their children.
That moment hit home for many students. Overcome with emotion, they reflected on times they had hurt their parents and how much they longed for them. The room was filled with tears – every girl was moved to sobs.
Mr. Kailas reminded them of their blessings: good health, loving family, friends, and opportunities. “You might not ace every exam, but I assure you that you will make it in life,” he said praising the NSS and its efforts.
The girls surrounded him and shook his hands, which were weakened by his condition. They beamed for photos together, cherishing the moment with their inspiring guest.
