Galaxy XR controllers and case are $250 each

Samsung’s new Galaxy XR headset is the world’s first Android XR device and a proper competitior to Apple’s Vision Pro. At $1,799 it’s a lot more affordable than Apple’s headset, but Samsung is charging a truly obscene $250 extra for the case and the controllers – and no, that’s not a combined price tag. The Galaxy XR headset, formerly known as “Project Moohan,” launched last night for $1,799. The headset delivers on deep Gemini integration, full access to a library of tablet apps from the Play Store, and dozens of XR experiences from the likes of Calm, Fox Sports, MLB, and more. While there’s no clear push towards productivity or gaming with Galaxy XR, a common thought when looking at a headset around gaming. As such, Samsung has released a pair of controllers that you can use with the headset. The controllers are $250. Advertisement - scroll for more content That’s right. Samsung’s wireless controllers for Galaxy XR are roughly the same price as a base Meta Quest 3S, which itself comes with a pair of comparable controllers that Meta sells spares of for $75 each – so $150 for a pair. What do these controllers do? Samsung explains: Enjoy intuitive remote control on Galaxy XR using the dual VST Controllers. Equipped with 6 DoF tracking technology and analog sticks, the Controllers deliver precise interactions in the 3D space for enhanced experiences. Immerse yourself in exciting gaming and captivating content with the Galaxy XR Controllers. Haptic feedback lets you experience tangible Controller responses when you are in the middle of an action-packed playthrough so you can feel every moment on the way to victory. Since these aren’t included out of the box, the only method of interaction you’ll get without them is with hand and eye tracking. More egregious than the cost of the controllers, though, is the cost of Samsung’s Galaxy XR Travel Case, which costs another $250. This case is, by Samsung’s own description, quite literally just a carrying case for the $1,800 headset. Galaxy XR Travel Case keeps your device and its in-box items all in one place so they’re at the ready when you need to use them. Thanks to the optimal internal structure, each part fits right into place for simple and convenient storage. Apple doesn’t include a free case with Vision Pro either, but even Apple’s case is $50 less than Samsung’s. The extra $500 charge for accessories is a tough pill to swallow on top of the already-expensive $1,800 price tag of Galaxy XR, but Samsung is somewhat lessening the blow with a 30% discount on either accessory when you buy the headset. If you reserved ahead of time, Samsung’s $100 credit can also be used with these.
