Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K. Pattabhiram has instructed officials from the public health wing of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) to take immediate steps to eliminate the foul odour emanating from the Gajuwaka dumping yard in Visakhapatnam. Accompanied by corporators and the GVMC staff, he inspected the dumping yard on Thursday. It was Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao who had brought the issue to the attention of the Chairman following complaints about the unpleasant odour from the dumping yard. While inspecting the site, the Chairman instructed the officials to ensure that no odour emanates from the dumping yard and directed that waste be regularly shifted from the Gajuwaka dumping yard to Kapuluppada dumping yard without delay. When he enquired why waste was still piled at the site, the GVMC officials explained that waste is being transported to Kapuluppada in three vehicles daily. However, due to the recent heavy rains, large amounts of silt had accumulated at the site resulting in the stench. Assistant Medical Officer Dr. Kiran Kumar assured that the accumulated waste would be cleared within a week by engaging additional vehicles.
