Gabe Kapler hired as Marlins general manager

"These three leaders have each made a meaningful impact since joining our team, exemplifying the values that define our culture: driving innovation across every area of the team, leading with a forward-thinking mindset and elevating those around them as great teammates," president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said in a statement. "Their advancement is a testament to the caliber of talent and person within our organization and our continued commitment to building a culture of collaboration and excellence." Kapler, who has been an assistant general manager for the Marlins since joining the organization in January 2024, becomes the sixth GM in club history. His focus has been on player, coaching and staff development since his arrival. In 2025, the Marlins’ Minor League system made franchise history with four affiliates reaching the postseason at their respective levels, including Jacksonville’s Triple-A national championship. Prior to joining Miami, Kapler spent time as manager of the Phillies (2018-19) and Giants (2020-23), winning the NL Manager of the Year Award in 2021. He also served as the Dodgers’ director of player development (2015-17), working with Marlins manager Clayton McCullough, and he had a 12-year career as player, including winning the World Series with the Red Sox in 2004. “It is an exciting time to be part of the Marlins’ organization, and I am ready to continue the great work we are doing here, alongside Peter and our entire baseball operations staff,” Kapler said in a statement. “The growth and momentum we’ve built are a direct reflection of a clear vision, a strong culture and an incredible team working together toward a shared goal. I’m proud to help continue that progress and contribute to what’s ahead.” Piliere has overseen the organization’s amateur scouts and led the Draft since taking over as director of amateur scouting in January 2024. Nine of Miami’s Top 30 prospects, per MLB Pipeline, have been acquired through his two Drafts. Before his time in Miami, Piliere was the Mariners’ assistant director of amateur scouting for three seasons during a six-year stint with the organization. He also worked for the Guardians and Rangers. His experience includes advance and pro scouting, national crosschecking and working as a contributing writer and analyst for sites such as FanGraphs and D1Baseball.com. Kanthan spent five seasons with the Rangers, the final two years as their assistant director of baseball operations, before joining the Marlins as director of baseball operations in January 2024. He was involved in all aspects of the department, including roster management, administrative and contract responsibilities for Texas’ Major League club, and played a role in sports science and performance. Kanthan’s MLB career began in 2016, working in ticket services for the hometown Phillies, prior to spending the 2017-18 seasons in baseball operations with Bendix and the Rays.
