Diarmaid Byrnes’ father, Niall, was hospitalised after being stabbed at his home in Patrickswell, County Limerick.
The incident occurred on Thursday, 11 September, around 9PM, with reports indicating that he was stabbed multiple times.
Gardaí have confirmed that he was rushed to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana stated: “Gardaí are investigating a serious assault which occurred in Patrickswell, Limerick, at approximately 9pm on Thursday, 11th of September, 2025.
“A man, aged in his 60s, was brought to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for serious injuries.
“A technical examination of the scene was carried out. Investigations are ongoing.”
The shocking incident comes just over a month after Diarmaid, a Limerick hurler, tied the knot with his partner Elaine Kennedy, a teacher, on 9 August at the luxurious Dunloe Hotel and Gardens near Killarney, County Kerry, reports RSVP Live.
Their wedding was graced by the presence of former Limerick captain Declan Hannon and his wife, Today FM presenter Louise Cantillon, as well as Cian Lynch and his girlfriend Dayna Slattery.
Other guests included William O’Donoghue and his fiancée Gemma Cowen, Aaron Gillane, Limerick LGFA player Roisin Ambrose and Barry Nash.
Diarmaid, who also serves as a business development executive for DHL Global Forwarding, has been in a relationship with Elaine for nearly a decade.
The GAA star proposed back in August 2023 during a holiday in Inchydoney, West Cork – just a few weeks after he clinched his fourth consecutive All-Ireland title.
A source told the Sunday World about the incident: “This is a devastating ordeal for the family to go through so soon after such a joyful celebration.
“There is huge shock in Patrickswell at what has happened here. Niall would be a very decent man.
“People are in shock and are struggling to get their head around this,” the source added.
Reports suggest that Diarmaid’s father Niall is currently in the Intensive Care Unit and remains under medical supervision.
