Full-time caregiver accused of leaving his mother in rotting, trash-filled home

MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (WKYT/Gray News) — A Kentucky man has been arrested after investigators say he neglected an older family member in his care. According to the Rockcastle County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Rockcastle Regional Hospital after a woman was brought in for treatment. Investigators determined the woman had been living in deplorable conditions at a home on Willow Tree Lane in Mount Vernon. The complaint said 911 was called for an ambulance to the home. When emergency responders arrived, they found the residence covered in trash and piles of rubbish, with rotting flooring that had holes throughout. The woman was discovered sitting in a reclining chair in unsanitary conditions. The complaint states the woman was found with severe wounds and infections, including a large open wound on her leg. Hospital staff reported the victim’s hair was severely matted and she had multiple wounds with dried blood on her body. According to deputies, the woman’s son, 38-year-old Jeremy Cook, was her full-time caregiver. Cook told investigators he cared for his mother daily, but deputies said the condition of the home and the woman’s health indicated otherwise. The woman’s son was arrested and charged with knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult, a felony under Kentucky law. His bond was set at $50,000.
