Over a million people in the UK are eligible for disability premiums, which is extra money added to other pre-existing benefit payments. These payments are added to income support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Housing Benefit. Through the Department for Work and Pensions, there are three different types of disability premiums available and recipients can receive more than one at a time. These are the standard disability premium, severe disability premium and enhanced disability premium. To be eligible for this, you or your partner must be under pension credit age and either registered blind or getting: In some cases, those who don’t qualify may still be entitled to the premium if they’ve been unable to work for at least a year. On the severe disability premium, a single person will get £82.90 a week and in a couple where they are both eligible they will get £165.80 a week, other couples will be eligible for £81.50 a week. To access this recipients must get the disability premium or income-related ESA, and either the PIP daily living component, AFIP, DLA care component at the middle or highest rate, Adult Disability Payment or Attendance Allowance. They may also only have someone aged 18 or above living with you if they receive a qualifying benefit, are registered blind, are a boarder or subtenant (but not a close relative) or they make separate payments to the landlord. You will not be entitled to the premium is someone is receiving the Carer’s Allowance, the carers element of Universal Credit or Carer Support Payment for looking after you. The enhanced disability premium means you are entitled to £21.20 a week for a single person and £30.25 for couples where at least one person is eligible.
