Fugitive Lalit Modi’s brother Samir Modi arrested in Delhi on rape charges, who is he?

Businessman Samir Modi was arrested at Delhi airport on Thursday after the police issued a Look-Out Circular against him. He was returning from a business trip to Europe when authorities took him into custody. Modi who is the brother of Lalit Modi was produced before a Delhi court and sent to one day of police custody. The arrest came after a woman filed a complaint at the New Friends Colony Police Station last week. She claimed she had been in a relationship with Modi since 2019.
The woman has also accused Samir Modi of repeatedly harassing assaulting and blackmailing her. She said he misled her with false promises of marriage even though he was already married.
According to PTI the complainant alleged that Modi threatened her and her family with serious harm if she revealed the truth. She further claimed he used his influence and power to pressure her into silence while continuing to give her false assurances police officials said.
In response Modi’s lawyer denied the allegations calling them false and an attempt to extort money. The lawyer said that in August this year Modi himself had lodged complaints with the police accusing the same woman of blackmail and demanding Rs. 50 crore. He also provided WhatsApp chats as proof.
The lawyer further criticized the police for rushing into the arrest saying Modi had already met the investigating officer before leaving the country. According to him the arrest on his return was “arbitrary” and a misuse of the law.
Who is Samir Modi?
Samir Modi is the youngest son of late industrialist K.K. Modi and a cousin of fugitive former IPL chief Lalit Modi. Over the years he has often made headlines not just for his role in business but also for family and legal disputes.
In August 2024 Samir was removed from the board of Godfrey Phillips India one of the group’s flagship companies after a bitter fallout with his mother Bina Modi and other directors. The rift turned public in May 2025 when he alleged that his mother’s security officer physically assaulted him during a board meeting. He accused her and senior directors of plotting against him though the police later cleared them of wrongdoing and charged only the security officer.
Samir has also been involved in long legal battles linked to his corporate tussles. In May 2025 he was acquitted in a defamation case filed by three independent directors of Godfrey Phillips: Lalit Bhasin Nirmala Bagri and Atul Kumar Gupta who had accused him of harming their reputations during the boardroom conflict.
