If you recently purchased frozen shrimp from your local grocery store, you might want to check the label before eating it.
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), three different frozen shrimp products that are sold at multiple grocery chains across the country have been recalled.
Wondering if your shrimp has been affected? Find all the essential details below.
The recalled shrimp is from AquaStar (USA) Corp
AquaStar (USA) Corp, a company that manufactures several frozen shrimp products, has recalled the following varieties from store shelves:
2-pound bags of Kroger Raw Colossal EZ Peel Shrimp (approximately 49,920 bags)
2-pound bags of Kroger Mercado Cooked Medium Peeled Tail-Off Shrimp (approximately 18,000 bags)
1.25-pound bags of AquaStar Raw Peeled Tail-on Shrimp Skewers (approximately 17,264 bags)
Why were the shrimp products recalled?
U.S. & World
According to a press release, the frozen shrimp products “may have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with cesium-137 (Cs-137).”
Per the FDA, Cs-137 is a “man-made radioisotope of cesium.”
“Traces of Cs-137 are widespread and can be present in the environment at background levels, and at higher levels in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental contamination,” the release reads.
Do the products pose any health risks?
Yes, they do. People who sustain “longer term, repeated low dose exposure” through consuming contaminated food or water can experience “an elevated risk of cancer” as a result of “damage to DNA within living cells of the body.”
So far, no illnesses have been reported. The FDA also noted that “no product that has tested positive or alerted for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) has entered the U.S. commerce.”
This is the second shrimp recall for contamination with radioactive material in the recent months.
Where were the products sold?
The recalled shrimp products were sold at the following stores between June 12, 2025 and Sept. 17, 2025: Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Foodsco, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Mariano’s, Metro Market, Pay Less Supermarkets, Pick ‘n Save, Ralphs, Smith’s and QFC.
