It’s been a tough season for the Frontier High School girls volleyball team (2-7) after a run to the Section VI Class AA semifinals last season. A bright spot for the program is sophomore Bryn Leyh, who is second in Section VI with 89 kills.
1. You are second in Section VI in kills. What has contributed to your individual success this season?
I started this year with a strong and determined mindset. I wanted to approach each practice and game with an optimistic attitude. I had a very intense club volleyball season, where we were playing high-level teams. That level of competition forced me to become a stronger player. Ultimately, volleyball is a team sport and my teammates have had the biggest impact on my individual success.
2. Last season, you had 27 kills. What’s it like having a bigger role on the team and how did you prepare for it?
Last season, I was playing right side. We had a senior outside hitter who was consistent and dominant [Marin Collins, now at Penn State]. This year, having switched positions to the primary outside hitter has given me more opportunities to contribute and help the offense. To prepare, I did offseason training by doing plyometrics and playing beach volleyball.
3. What are some of your favorite things to do outside of Buffalo?
My family has a tradition where we go on a cruise over February break each year. I have been very lucky to travel to many Caribbean islands. One of my favorite things to do is relax on the beach and do a little shopping. Also, travel club volleyball has given me the opportunity to visit many cities throughout the U.S., like Las Vegas, Dallas and Boston, where we competed for national titles.
4. It’s been a tough season so far for the team. What do you all have to do to turn your season around?
It’s always difficult when so many talented players graduate and leave the team. We have been focused on finding the right combination of girls to step into those positions. Communication has been an important priority. We have come into every game with a positive attitude, prepared to win. We need to keep this up and continue to improve. I believe in my teammates that we can do that.
5. What do you enjoy the most about the sport?
I have grown up around volleyball. I have an older sister, Ava, who has been playing for years. I have been influenced and shown that volleyball isn’t just a sport, but it’s a lifelong experience. I have always found a way to play the sport, including school volleyball, club volleyball and beach volleyball. Even though volleyball can be challenging at times, it has given me my best friends. I have made so many friendships through the sport. It’s such a privilege to play on many different teams that have allowed me to meet so many amazing players and parents.
