From Pitch to Track: New stars like Osimhen and Amusan to emerge at Amuwo Games

The 2025 Amuwo Games kick off in Lagos with over 50,000 residents competing across 16 sports The 2025 Amuwo Games officially kicked off on Saturday with great excitement and participation from across the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, as more than 50,000 residents gear up to compete in the fifth edition of the grassroots sports festival. The event, themed “Cancel Scam Culture,” is designed to promote discipline, integrity, and community unity while discovering new sporting talents who could become Nigeria’s next global stars, like Victor Osimhen and Tobi Amusan. The multi-sport festival will feature 16 different sports, including athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis, table tennis, chess, draughts, cycling, marathon, scrabble, and five-a-side football. Building talent and Character through Sports Speaking at the opening ceremony, Seun Ayeni, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and initiator of the Amuwo Games, described the event as a life-changing platform for young athletes and a strategic intervention to channel youthful energy toward positive goals. “The theme is a bold and timely message. Through sports, we are promoting values of honesty, accountability, and hard work, not just on the field but in society,” Ayeni said. He added, “This initiative was born out of a need to redirect negative energy among youths into something productive. From the first edition to now, we’ve witnessed tremendous growth, and I’m proud of how the Games have evolved.” He revealed that, unlike in previous years, athletes will receive rewards and recognition for their performances. All participants are also benefiting from free registration, technical support, and medical screening thanks to the event’s community-based partnerships. Lagos Sports Commission backs Grassroots Initiative The Lagos State Sports Commission, represented by its Director of Sports, Nunayon Travih, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to grassroots sports development. “The Sports Commission has supported the Amuwo Games from day one. This initiative aligns perfectly with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritises youth engagement through sports,” Travih said. He added, “We have our coaches and scouts monitoring various events to identify talents within different age categories. These young athletes represent the future of Lagos and Nigeria.” Travih also urged participants to remain disciplined and focused, warning against social vices that could derail their sporting and personal development. The 2025 Amuwo Games will run across multiple venues within the Amuwo Odofin LGA and will culminate in a grand closing ceremony on Saturday, November 23, 2025.
