From Overcoming Parents’ Doubt To Winning Best Director At Venice Film Festival: A Look At Anuparna Roy’s Inspiring Journey

Anuparna Roy made history at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival by becoming the first Indian director to win the Best Director Award in the Orizzonti (Horizons) section for her debut film, ‘Songs of Forgotten Trees’. But her achievement is more than just a trophy — it’s the culmination of an inspiring journey from Purulia, a small village in West Bengal, to the global stage, capturing hearts along the way.
Anuparna Roy was born in Narayanpur, Purulia, and was raised in a simple, middle-class family far removed from the glamour of films. (Image: Instagram)
She completed her primary education at Narayanpur Primary School, continued her high school education at Ranipur Colliery High School, and later Naopara High School. (Image: Instagram)
She studied English Honours at Kulti College and went on to complete a Master’s in Mass Communication in Delhi. (Image: Instagram)
Before stepping into films, Anuparna worked in the IT sector. In 2022, she disappointed everyone by quitting her job and moving to Mumbai, leaving family and friends doubtful. (Image: Instagram)
Despite their concerns, she chased her passion and followed her dream of becoming a filmmaker. (Image: Instagram)
At first, her parents, Brahmananda Roy and Manisha Roy, were against her decision. Her mother hoped she would secure a government job and often expressed her frustration over the career change. (Image: Instagram)
Meanwhile, her father saw her move as a risky gamble when he first heard about her plans. (Image: Instagram)
Today, they beam with pride, admiring her unwavering conviction even in the face of opposition. (Image: Instagram)
Life in Mumbai wasn’t easy either. With no big budget or studio support, Anuparna wrote and shot Songs of Forgotten Trees inside her small flat in Azad Nagar. (Image: Instagram)
Her journey is a beautiful reminder that no dream is too big when you hold on with courage and heart. From a small village to the world’s spotlight, Anuparna Roy shows what perseverance truly means. (Image: Instagram)
