BINTULU, Sept 16: Sarawak’s achievements in high-value sectors including renewable energy, digital technology and semiconductors will not only drive the State’s prosperity but also elevate Malaysia’s standing in the eyes of the world.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that Sarawak’s rapid transformation has positioned the State as a powerhouse within the federation, earning international recognition as a high-income economy by the World Bank since 2022.
“We have developed renewable energy such as hydro, hydrogen, and solar, which positions Sarawak as the driver of the nation’s clean energy. With this strength, Sarawak is now recognised as the ‘Battery of ASEAN’, supplying energy not only for our people, but also for our neighbours in Kalimantan. We will also expand energy supply to Singapore, Brunei, and eventually to other Southeast Asian countries.
“By 2030, I am confident that Sarawak will continue to be a key contributor to Malaysia’s economy, particularly through the development of new high-value industry chains,” he said at the Sarawak-level Malaysia Day 2025 celebration at Bintulu Old Airport tonight, which was streamed live via Ukas Channel.
Themed “Sarawak Maju Makmur Dalam Malaysia” (Sarawak Progressive and Prosperous Within Malaysia), the celebration was officiated by Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
With Malaysia assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, Abang Johari also affirmed Sarawak’s readiness to play its role as a strategic gateway to the Borneo region and Southeast Asia, not only in the field of economy, but also in culture, education, and regional cooperation.
He also underscored Sarawak’s digital innovation, citing the breakthrough by Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) in producing KETEQ AI, the world’s first edge artificial intelligence power converter prototype, in collaboration with CSA Catapult UK.
Additionally, through a partnership with X-FAB Dresden in Germany, Sarawak is set to produce next-generation Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor chips, which outperform conventional silicon chips under high temperature and voltage conditions.
“This chip creation is the result of research by SMD at its R&D centre in Cardiff, carried out by Sarawak talents.
“We have achieved several milestones that have made Malaysia proud in the eyes of the world through these strategic planning and development strategies,” he said.
He further emphasised that Sarawak’s aviation ambitions will take flight in 2026 with the launch of AirBorneo, establishing the State as a regional air hub that will boost trade and tourism across Asia.
“In the banking sector, the majority acquisition of shares in Affin Bank will open wider financing access for local entrepreneurs to start or expand their enterprises to greater levels and explore new opportunities,” he added.
Looking ahead, the Premier reaffirmed Sarawak’s commitment to sustainability, with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 setting the course for economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental balance, alongside the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and a target of Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
He also emphasised the State’s investment in its young generation, announcing that beginning next year, free higher education will be offered at Sarawak government-owned universities to ensure equal opportunities in academic excellence and nation-building.
“This is our journey, building a progressive, prosperous and competitive Sarawak, while contributing to a greater Malaysia,” he said.
Concluding his speech, Abang Johari called on Sarawakians to uphold unity, defend their rights and strengthen Malaysia’s dignity as the nation celebrates its 62nd Malaysia Day. — DayakDaily
