Justice Surya Kant has been today (October 30) appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) and will assume charge on November 24. The notification of this appointment was released by the Department of Justice in the Union Law Ministry. Born on February 10, 1962, Kant is an Indian judge of the Supreme Court of India. He was born in the Hisar district village Petwar of Haryana into a middle class family. He graduated from the Government Post Graduate College, Hisar in 1981. Following this, he then earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. Maharshi Dayanand University, also called M.D. University or simply MDU, was earlier known as the University of Rohtak. Established in 1976, the university is named after the noted Indian social reformer Dayananda Saraswati. MDU offers undergraduate degrees in arts, law, commerce, science and engineering programs, awarding BA, BSc, BCom, BALLB Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees. The university also offers postgraduate programs that lead to Master of Technology (M.Tech.), Master of Science (MSc) by research, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA)LLM, Msc, MA, MCom, MBA and doctorate (Ph.D.). The MSc and PhD are research degrees. Along with Kant, it has been the training ground for several known personalities such as Geeta Phogat — freestyle wrestler, Jaideep Ahlawat — Bollywood actor, Sakshi Malik — Olympic Bronze-medalist, Captain Deepak Sharma — Kirti Chakra (2011), and more. After that, he also pursued Master of Laws from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra (KUK) in 2011 where he stood at the top of his class. KUK was established in 1956, and the campus is located on the western bank of Brahma Sarovar in the city of Kurukshetra. In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, Kurukshetra University was ranked 35th among State Public Universities. It had previously been ranked 41st in 2024 in the same category.
