From Guillermo del Toro's fantastic Frankenstein to Kim...

Home and Garden Strictly Come Dancing Big Brother Great British Bake Off Privacy Policy Friday, Nov 7th 2025 5-Day Forecast Advertisement From Guillermo del Toro's fantastic Frankenstein to Kim Kardashian in arguably the worst show of 2025, our critics have picked the 19 biggest series and films to stream this weekend What have you been watching? Comment and let us know By WEEKEND MAGAZINE Published:17:13 GMT, 7 November 2025 |Updated:17:13 GMT, 7 November 2025 Frankenstein (2025 film) Guillermo del Toro's ghoulish and visually lavish take on Mary Shelley's novel Certificate: 15 Watch now on Netflix Director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape Of Water) has dreamed of making his own version of Frankenstein since he was a boy, and you can feel his passion for the story in this visually lavish, two-and-a-half hour epic that earned a cinema release before arriving on Netflix. The movie opens with Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) rescued from apparent doom by ice-trapped sailors in the Arctic. Victor then relates his story in flashback, before the creature (Jacob Elordi) picks up the tale from his perspective. The film seeks to explain both of their lives and torments and, in doing so, gives them a slightly different ending to that granted by Mary Shelley in her book. The scale of the production is mind-boggling, from the estate where Victor grows up, to the ice-trapped ship where he looks back on life to the terrifying tower where the creature is forged. Isaac radiates a dark energy as the fiercely focused Frankenstein, layering that with a charm that can make you see why his brother's fiancée, Elizabeth (a wonderfully ethereal Mia Goth), could find him attractive. The stuff he gets up to in the lab with the dead bodies is grim, and del Toro doesn't flinch from any of the details, presenting them with a macabre yet matter-of-fact flourish. It's a miracle, really, that this is not an 18. As the creature, Saltburn star Elordi lets his soulful eyes do most of the talking although, when he does start to speak in full sentences, he does so in a northern accent - which he would, because that's how the blind man (David Bradley) he learns from speaks. The film is full of neat little moments and choices like that from its cast, all of which help give it a sense of individuality and even humour. If you've never seen a Frankenstein story on screen before, this one should knock your socks off with its sheer scale and the surprise of its human drama. And, if you've seen plenty and you're well familiar with who the real monster is here, then the scale, the costumes and the detail in the performances should deliver more than enough entertainment. It would have made a hell of a three-part TV series but, of course, then it wouldn't be eligible for an Oscar... (149 minutes) All Her Fault Succession's Sarah Snook stars in a missing child thriller based on Andrea Mara's novel Certificate: 15 Watch now on NOW Watch now on Sky Based on the novel by Irish author Andrea Mara, All Her Fault is one of those thrillers that will be instantly relatable to any parent who has momentarily misplaced their child. Succession's Sarah Snook stars as Marissa, a mother who arrives to pick up her son Milo from a playdate only to be told 'There's no Milo here'. And Milo hasn't just popped over the road to the playground, either. The woman who answers the door has never even heard of him. You can feel Marissa's heart drop at that moment and she's not given much reason to relax after that in an eight-part thriller that echoes The Stolen Girl in its set-up, but is more grounded in style and doesn't let up from that opening scene. As news of the child's disappearance spreads through Marissa's well-to-do suburban friends, it becomes apparent that the guilty party must be someone she knows - but who? Anchored by Snook's strong performance and with notable support from Dakota Fanning, this is the kind of thriller that delights in revealing the secrets behind suburban facades, steadily building the pressure until the truth is finally known. It's also particularly good at showing the female perspective, and picks neatly away at the frustrations and guilt that can simmer around the responsibilities of parenting. (Eight episodes) Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan's genre-bending sci-fi thriller Certificate: 15 Watch now on Apple TV Before Vince Gilligan wrote Breaking Bad he worked on The X-Files and even co-created a spin-off (The Lone Gunmen), and that paranoid style of sci-fi is a strong theme in Pluribus, his unpredictable, gripping, dryly witty and utterly intriguing nine-part drama for Apple. The story tracks a virus that transforms the world's population into relentlessly cheery and helpful individuals, and left to deal with them all is Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), a cynical romance novelist who is sick to death of people, especially having just finished a book tour talking to enthusiastic fans of her latest novel, which she hates. The story of what is actually going on is best left to the viewer to discover but, rest assured, this is one drama that will certainly be worth your time, not just because of the talent involved but because of the way they've executed it. Seehorn - so great in Gilligan's Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul - holds the emotional centre of the story effortlessly, and pay close attention to what you're being shown in each shot. It's one of those shows where everything feels intentional. So certain were Apple of Gilligan's vision that two series were ordered right off the bat, and you can see why. (Nine episodes) Kenny Dalglish Profile of the Liverpool and Scotland football great, directed by Asif Kapadia Certificate: 12 Watch now on Prime Video Asif Kapadia, the Oscar and BAFTA-winning director of Amy and Senna, is behind this very personal profile of Scottish footballing great Kenny Dalglish, the winner of no fewer than nine league titles and three European Cups as player and then manager at Liverpool. The film feels very much like it comes directly from Dalglish, who narrates this whole, warm mix of personal and archive footage, punctuated by occasional Boys' Own-style comic strip interludes. It's without the kind of talking heads that fill lesser films of its kind but, occasionally, other carefully selected voices enter the mix - we hear brief clips of Kenny's girlfriend-then-wife Marina, who he's been married to since 1974, and from former team mates Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen - but this is very much a portrait of one man told by him, as if he were sitting opposite you at closing time in a pub. 'Kenny Dalglish was my hero as a kid and I had his picture on my wall in north London where I grew up,' reflects Kapadia, and you can feel that appreciation in the space the director has given his hero to tell his story here. (103 minutes) Moody detective series set on the windswept Scottish isle, now back for series ten Year: 2013- Certificate: 15 Watch now on BBC iPlayer Over seven series Douglas Henshall's DI Jimmy Perez not only caught criminals but quite often wrestled with some murky moral dilemmas of his own. On Shetland, crime wasn't just black and white, but as grey as those wide, yearning skies. Perez was the centre of it all and Henshall's performance - as a man of few words and subtle expressions - was an absolute standout. The location was a big part of the show's character, too, not just the stunning landscape, but the sense of a tight-knit, isolated community that bred not only close friendships but unhealthy obsessions. In the eighth series, Perez moved on. Taking his place on Shetland was Ashley Jensen's new DI, native Shetlander Ruth Calder, returning to the Isles after 20 years away to work alongside series regular DS Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh (Alison O'Donnell). Jensen was perhaps previously better known as a comedy actress, from shows such as Extras, so this change of direction, with an all-female lead detecting team, was exciting to see. Their supportive double act continues in merry fashion into the ninth and the latest tenth series, too, which opens with the discovery of a woman's body that's been left in an unsettling pose - facing out to sea. What could it mean? (Ten series) Girlbands Forever Members of All Saints, Atomic Kitten and more reflect on the highs and lows of fame Watch now on BBC iPlayer Following the success of Boybands Forever in 2024, this three-parter tracks the rise of girl groups in the 1990s and beyond, starting with All Saints and the Spice Girls. It's aided by a rich collection of archive footage and commentary from band members, including a particularly frank reflection from All Saint Melanie Blatt. Part two tells the story of the generation of bands that came after the initial wave, including Atomic Kitten, while the third moves toward the 2010s, tracking the trajectories of Little Mix and the ever-changing line-up of Sugababes. Even if you weren't singing along with their tunes at the time, it's worth a watch for nostalgia and gossip value alone. It's also interesting to see the story of fame presented from the other side, and with the distance of time. When these bands were riding high, it looked as if they were having a ball. The view was often way less rosy from the inside, though, as these interviews reveal. (Three episodes) Changing Ends Comedy telling of Alan Carr's childhood, growing up in 1980s Northampton Certificate: 12 Watch now on ITVX Watch now on Disney+ You've got to feel for young Alan Carr, growing up in the 1980s with a macho dad and judgmental neighbours. While young Alan thinks he's bubbly and fun, to others he's 'different' (one of the kinder descriptions) or a 'four-eyed freak' (much less kind). With Carr The Elder hovering in the background to narrate his loosely autobiographical tale, it's the casting of Oliver Savell as young Alan that really makes this sitcom work (he's definitely Alan, but not too much). Special mention also goes to Shaun Dooley (the voice of SAS: Who Dares Wins) as Alan's dad Graham - the manager of fourth-division Northampton Town FC - who conveys perfectly the struggles of loving but not entirely understanding his son. A third series is on the way. (Two series) Down Cemetery Road Emma Thompson stars in a private-eye thriller based on Mick Herron's book Certificate: 15 Watch now on Apple TV Based on the Mick Herron book of the same name, Down Cemetery Road is a story about private eyes, rather than spies. One private eye in particular: old school gumshoe Joe Silverman (Adam Godley), a shambling but likeably romantic sort who works out of an office in Oxford. He's married to hard-bitten Zoe (Emma Thompson), who doesn't seem to like him very much, and into their lives one day comes Sarah (Ruth Wilson), who has a mystery on her hands. One night, Sarah was at a dinner party that was rocked by a neighbourhood gas explosion. That same night, a girl went missing and all Sarah's efforts to find her have been met with stonewalling. What on earth is going on? Unfolding across eight parts, Down Cemetery Road is an engagingly unconventional thriller that keeps its conspiracy thriller cards close to its chest, and Thompson is a lot of fun to watch as the edgy investigator - you can almost imagine her rocking up at Slough House where, you can be sure, she wouldn't take any of Jackson Lamb's nonsense... (Eight episodes) The Moonies: Married To The Cult A reporter and ex-members provide startlng insider insight into the church known for its mass weddings Certificate: 15 Watch now on Prime Video Known for those mass weddings between people who had never met before, the Unification Church was founded by Sun Myung Moon in South Korea in 1954. His followers - the Moonies - gave much of their autonomy to their leader. Small wonder, really, considering how Moon positioned himself to them, as the second coming of Jesus Christ, here to save the world from sin. He even wrote his own version of the Bible, entitled The Divine Principle. When Moon turned his eyes towards the US and began recruiting there, reporter Shann Jones started to take an interest. She became suspicious of how Moonies targeted lonely-seeming young people, and allowed herself to be recruited to be able to tell the inside story. Jones is one of those interviewed for this eye-opening and mildly cheeky documentary, including plenty of ex-members and Sam Park, who says that he's Moon's illegitimate son. Park gives a good explanation of the mass weddings and associated sex ceremonies, saying the couples were brought together in an effort to eradicate original sin from humanity. The children they had would be free from sin - Blessed Children, such as Park, a title he acknowledges with a wry smile - who would then be responsible for populating the world with perfect people. No pressure, then. (89 minutes) Robin Hood (2025 series) Sean Bean is the Sheriff of Nottingham in this good-looking take on the Robin Hood story Certificate: 15 Watch now on MGM+ Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham is something anyone would want to see, and he's the big-name draw for this sweeping ten-part take on the Robin Hood story. There's a good-looking younger cast as the outlaws taking on the corrupt Norman regime, led by Aussie newcomer Jack Patten as a very English-sounding Robin and Hollyoaks' Lauren McQueen as his Marian. Aside from the Sheriff's general dastardliness and Norman allegiance, Robin has a specific axe to grind against Bean's snarling antagonist - he executed his father, Hugh (Tom Mison). The story isn't just about Robin's revenge, though. The series places Robin and Marian very much on an even footing, with he running around robbing the rich and frustrating the Sheriff and she working to advance their merry band's noble aims at court. Patten was aiming for a career in Australian football before a knee injury pivoted him to acting and has a quiet strength in the lead, while McQueen makes for a passionate and sparkly eyed Marian. The formidable Connie Nielsen adds more acting ballast to the grown-up baddie side of the cast as Eleanor of Aquitaine, then the Queen of England and a force at court and, as such, more an opponent for Marian than she is for Robin. (Ten episodes) Death By Lightning Starry historical drama about a US presidential assassination, from the producers of Game Of Thrones Certificate: 15 Watch now on Netflix David Benioff and DB Weiss brought Game Of Thrones to our TV screens to great success, then the sci-fi thriller 3 Body Problem to Netflix, to less success. The pair pivot away from fantasy entirely here to produce Death By Lightning, a four-part drama about an important point in American history - the assassination of President James A Garfield by Charles Guiteau in 1881. Based on the book Destiny Of The Republic, it's an extremely well-cast affair, with Oscar nominee Michael Shannon as Garfield, Betty Gilpin as his wife Lucretia and Matthew Macfadyen as Guiteau, a passionate and mentally unstable supporter of the rising politician who turned against him after Garfield was elected and refused to reward his energies with a consulship. Produced with great historical depth and performed with a strong dramatic thread and even a little rough and tumble humour, this is full-throated drama that shows us both Garfield's life and death and also features Nick Offerman and Bradley Whitford on its impressive cast. Even if you have no knowledge of this period of US history, Death By Lightning should pull you in by its sheer weight of talent - and keep an eye out for a few more British faces further down the cast list, including Tuppence Middleton and Ben Miles. (Four episodes) Witty comedy about coming-of-age in LA, starring its creator Rachel Sennott Certificate: 15 Watch now on NOW Rising star Rachel Sennott is the creator, co-writer and main character of this LA-set comedy that, pitched bluntly, plays a little like a West Coast version of Girls. Sennott is Maia, who is marking her birthday and looking to advance in her talent management career when Tallulah (Odessa A'zion, daughter of Pamela Adlon), a chaotic influencer friend of hers from New York, who seems utterly incapable of compromise, swings into town. We also meet her sweet, very reasonable and borderline doormat of a boyfriend, Dylan (The Hunger Games' Josh Hutcherson), and Maia's boss, the breezily detached Alyssa (Leighton Meester). I Love LA is chiefly a coming-of-age comedy about Maia, but it's also an ensemble show and very much about the place and time that it's set, from the weirdness of regular earthquake alerts to bizarre showbiz parties and the yawning gap between how people present themselves and what their life is actually like - both in social media and elsewhere. It's not as emotionally raw as Girls, but the writing is pin-sharp and frequently hilarious in a way that you don't always realise at first listen - some of the lines are like timebombs that go off in your head a couple of seconds after the characters say them. It's a very bingeable show too so, if you run out of episodes, do seek out Sennott's breakout role in the darkly hilarious movie Shiva Baby. (Eight episodes) Trigger Point Line Of Duty's Vicky McClure stars in this explosive drama, now back for series three Year: 2022- Certificate: 15 Watch now on ITVX Watch now on Disney+ This police drama stars Line Of Duty's Vicky McClure, and comes from the production company of Jed Mercurio, that show's creator. It introduces us to some new police lingo as Explosives Officer - 'Expo' - Lana 'Wash' Washington and her colleagues race to defuse explosive situations all around London, and it proved a massive hit with audiences. Now in its third series (with a fourth on the way), not all of Lana's colleagues have stayed the distance in a show that consistently ratchets up the wire-cutting, nail-biting tension. In each series there's a different bomb-based peril, laced with elements of a police procedural so that you follow a complex investigation alongside all the high-stress, high-stakes action. McClure is a charismatic lead, all but carrying the show on her own, especially by series three, which finds the team racing around trying to catch a bomber urging his booby-trapped victims to 'confess or die', and we are also invested in her personally as she struggles to deal with the pressures of her inordinately high-pressure job. (Three series) Return To Paradise Australian spin-off from the cosy crime drama Death In Paradise, now in its second series Watch now on BBC iPlayer There's already been a British spin-off from Death In Paradise - Beyond Paradise - and here's an Australian one. Anna Samson plays DI Mackenzie 'Mack' Clarke, an Aussie-born London cop who returns Down Under to help the local police solve crimes. She leaves the Met police with a cloud hanging over her head and she's not best pleased to be back in her least favourite place - her home town of Dolphin Cove. The feeling is mutual, though, as the locals aren't thrilled to see her back either. And that's a large part of the fun of this series. Mackenzie may have a superior sleuthing brain but she also has a habit of rubbing people up the wrong way - mainly due to the fact that she jilted her fiancé on their wedding day, which hasn't gone down well in this tight-knit community. The formula is pretty much as you would expect, with Mackenzie's colleagues bearing a striking resemblance to their counterparts in Saint-Marie, just with Aussie accents. Lloyd Griffith is useless Detective Colin Cartwright, Tai Hara is hunky pathologist - and Mackenzie's ex - Glenn Strong, Celia Ireland is kooky receptionist Reggie Rocco, and Aaron L McGrath is nice but dim Constable Felix Wilkinson. But it turns out this motley crew have a keen eye for crime-solving... while Mack has unfinished business with her former fiance Glenn (Tai Hara). It's all very enjoyable stuff. (Two series) Art Detectives True Blood's Stephen Moyer stars as a British art sleuth Certificate: 15 Watch now on U (UKTV) A cosy British mystery that looks to be very much in the vein of The Chelsea Detective, at least at first glance, Art Detectives has something special going for it - Stephen Moyer as its star. A veteran lead actor with charm to burn (think of his Bill the vampire in True Blood), here Moyer is playing DI Mick Palmer, the only detective in the Heritage Crime Unit and, to be frank, a right art nerd. His tramp-like dad (Larry Lamb) was a forger who made a lot of bad choices and Mick does his best to ignore him, even when he's standing right in front him. His love interest is played by Sarah Alexander, and the pair have a delightful way of flirting over the most unsexy words imaginable. Palmer is brought into murder cases with strong art links, and combines a boyish enthusiasm for art with a forensic knowledge of its history and an eagle eye for the guilty. His partner in these cases is DC Shazia Malik (Virdee's Nina Singh), and she serves as a plain-speaking interpreter for his geekier moments. The mysteries they solve are solid enough, but it's Moyer you tune in for, as he steadily reveals more of the surprisingly multi-faceted Palmer. A second series has already been ordered. (Six episodes) Game Of Wool: Britain's Best Knitter Tom Daley dives in to hosting a kitting contest Certificate: pg Watch now on Channel 4 Olympian and keen knitter Tom Daley welcomes you to the 'yarn barn' where he promises 'knitting like you've never seen it before'. Ten amateur knitters head to Scotland to face two challenges a week in the hope of being named supreme champion. And it's not just jumpers and cardigans. You know the format by now, it's been done with baking, clothes-making, pottery and more; and it makes sense. Knitting has seen an explosion in popularity recently, and this age-old, highly accessible and affordable craft can be highly technical, hugely creative as well as mentally calming and rewarding. But does it make great telly, watching a bunch of people quietly sitting down and clacking their needles? Certainly, anyone with a passing interest in knitting or crafting will gather to the screens, but what about the rest of us? Happily, Daley is joined by knitwear experts Sheila Greenwell and Di Gilpin to judge the knits, and we learn as we go about the history and origins of techniques, garments and wool, including in the first episode the famous Fair Isle jumper. Add to that the colourful, eccentric characters competing, who despite their placid demeanours aren't afraid to tell Tom to buzz off as the deadline approaches. (Eight episodes) Original Gangsters With Sean Bean The star explores the history of gangs in the UK and the US, starting with the Peaky Blinders Certificate: u Watch now on NOW 'Who were the real Peaky Blinders?' Sitting behind a big, darkly lit desk scattered with ye olde paper and speaking in low, ominous tones, Sean Bean is the perfect host for this atmospheric four-parter tracking the stories of gangs. Birmingham's Peaky Blinders are the Sharpe star's first stop, in an episode that explains how the gang made famous by the BBC drama arose out of post-First World War economic desperation. We hear more about the context of the time from historians - also sitting in atmospherically lit chairs, flanked by whisky they don't drink - about the times and its kingpins, such as head Peaky Blinder Billy Kimber and rivals Darby Sabini and Edward Emmanuel - 'England's first godfather' - and the gang war that raged between Birmingham and the South. Before the end, the episode makes a point of separating the fact from fiction in how such figures were portrayed on screen. Parts two and three head across the Atlantic to deal with Chicago's Al Capone and Harlem's Stephanie St Clair - a rare leading female figure in the gangster world - before heading back to the UK to tackle Billy Hill and the Krays in part four. Read our Inside Story on the series here. (Four episodes) Profile of Pulitzer Prize-winning conflict photographer Lynsey Addario, both at home and in Ukraine Certificate: 15 Watch now on Disney+ The American Lynsey Addario is a Pulitzer Prize-winning conflict photographer, and she's passionate about her work. She's also a wife and mother and this documentary, from filmmaking duo Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin - who won an Oscar for Free Solo - details both sides of her life. It opens with Addario reporting from Ukraine as the Russian attacks began in February 2022, then picks up with her home life and explores how easily professional doors can shut for women once employers know they have children. The mix of footage of Addario at home and at work provides an unusually rounded profile of an unusually rounded woman - anyone who's had conversations about child logistics will recognise the type of exchanges she has with her husband here, but not all of us will have had them from a warzone. Following this side of her life also provides a timely portrait of the up-close consequences and realities of war. As a bit of context for the making of the film, it's intriguing to note that Vasarhelyi and Chin, who were married for years and have two children of their own, filed for divorce in 2025. (95 minutes) Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close star in a glossy legal drama from Ryan Murphy Certificate: 15 Watch now on Disney+ A glossy American legal drama from famously OTT producer Ryan Murphy, starring Glenn Close, Sarah Paulson and Kim Kardashian? All's Fair is attention-grabbing TV and no mistake, from the acting talent involved through to its gender wars plot, which follows an all-female team of divorce lawyers who set up their own firm to take men for all they're worth. Kardashian, who is also well on the way to becoming a real-life lawyer, is a stronger acting presence than many give her credit for and riffs off her beauty queen persona here, much as she did in series 12 of Murphy's American Horror Story. Keep an eye out for the scenes between her Allura Grant and acidic rival attorney Carrington Lane (Paulson), who mocks Grant's appearance by turning up dressed as her. Kardashian is certainly a good sport. The cast also features Naomi Watts among the legal eagles and Elizabeth Berkley, Grace Gummer and Brooke Shields among their clients. You can't help but wonder if such a cast would have preferred a better script, because it really couldn't get much more basic than this - and all the fancy sets, frocks and even Glenn Closes in the world can only make up for so much that isn't there on the page. In terms of the gap between what it could have been and what it is, All's Fair could wind up being the worst series of the year.
