An old video, shot in the 1990s, at Infosys Bengaluru has gone viral on social media, taking us back to what were simpler times, with no mobile phones and only friends and work colleagues to chat with during our breaks. The clip shows employees enjoying their lunch in the campus canteen, chatting, laughing and bonding with colleagues. As the video went viral, many pointed out that it wasn’t just the absence of phones but also how employees looked healthier and relaxed that ought to be noticed. The video has also made many former employees and their families or friends share how working at Infosys helped them achieve great success and wealth. Infosys Canteen Video From 90s Goes Viral The video posted on X (Formerly Twitter) came with the caption, “Footage from Infosys canteen, Bangalore in 1990s. Almost everyone in this is probably a multi-millionaire and settled abroad today.” Footage from Infosys canteen, Bangalore in 1990s. Retired at age 38 with nearly 100 Crores in 2006. Hasn’t worked a day since. Still lives in Bengaluru. Doesn’t drive a fancy car. Has a nice flat but when you meet him, you cannot know (I’m guessing) he’s worth 200-300Cr today.” Another mentioned, “Clean-shaven, fitter bodies, no potbellies, no phones glued to hands, no AI-induced job anxiety. Just genuine laughs and cross-cultural friendships. What a blessed era to work in IT.” Another, who joined the company for a special program, revealed, “I was in grade 9. Infosys Bhubaneswar campus ran a program, Catch Them Young (CTY). We sat in on an aptitude test and across schools, some 25 students were picked for a 2 month summer holiday program at Infosys BBSR campus. We were taught to code in the test mode and were aligned with one software engineer each. He was our buddy and mentor. Back then, the Infosys campus was next to the planetarium at Jaydev Vihar intersection.” “That was the first time I saw a proper corporate office. The campus was something I had never imagined. They had free lunch, coffee machines, gym, basketball court, everyone was dressed so well, and the most shocking thing – you could address everyone by their first name. No need to say sir or madam. Day 1, we were told we had to follow all the rules that were applicable to employees and we had the same rights. All 25 of us were super excited that we had rights – if someone spoke to us rudely, we could literally report,” he added. The person explained that the employees at Infosys were very helpful and supported each other. Many of them were going to the US or had returned from there. Infosys was among the first Indian firms to provide employee stock options and bring American corporate culture to India. The company also focused on building good workspaces and facilities for its staff. One more added, “I’m ex-Infosys from that period. 20 somethings now are fitter, more health conscious than we were. I think there were more smokers/drinkers than amongst us. (Although there are more women smokers/drinkers now than in the 90s/2000s). We slogged like hell. 15 hour workday was routine. I spent 50+ hours in the office once. Don’t be misled by 90 second videos. It WAS a great time to work though, but that was because we had humbler backgrounds than the average employee now and we had more/better opportunities because the industry was nascent. My first on site trip was before I completed my first year in Infosys and there were others in my batch who went before me.” Founders Who Shaped The Company Infosys was co-founded in 1981 by Narayana Murthy along with six other engineers, Nandan Nilekani, Kris Gopalakrishnan, SD Shibulal, Ashok Arora, NS Raghavan and K Dinesh.
