Despite countless warnings about cybersecurity, millions of people are still using shockingly weak passwords in 2025. According to a new report by Comparitech, the world's most common password is once again "123456." More than 2 billion leaked passwords from real data breaches this year were analysed by the portal. And the findings are both fascinating and alarming. The top three passwords, "123456," "12345678," and "123456789" were used by millions of accounts. Rounding out the top ten were familiar offenders like "admin," "password," and "12345." More than a third (38.6%) included the sequence "123." Some users got slightly creative. Variations of "password" appeared in nearly 4% of the top 1,000 entries, while "admin" showed up in 2.7%. Even "qwerty" and "welcome" made appearances, according to Comparitech. And then there was "minecraft" which became the 100th most-used password, showing up almost 90,000 times. Meanwhile, "India@123" cracked the top 100 at rank #53, one of the few regionally distinctive entries. Most experts recommend a password length of at least 12 characters. Increasing password length significantly reduces the chances of it being cracked. But 65.8% of the passwords, according to the report, had fewer than 12 characters. The takeaway? For all the talk of cybersecurity, it seems old habits die hard, and hackers couldn't be happier!
