Frigid, sunny Monday morning in Metro Detroit, rain late week

A frosty start to Sunday reminded Southeast Michigan that late October can bring freezing temperatures. Lows bottomed out in the upper-20s across western and northern parts of Southeast Michigan, such as Lapeer, Flint, and Ann Arbor, while Detroit Metro Airport settled in the mid-30s. Sunday night Another cold night is ahead as temperatures dip back into the upper-20s to upper-30s, setting up a freezing Monday morning. Under mostly clear skies, patchy frost will be possible in colder communities. Looking Ahead High pressure will keep skies mostly sunny to partly cloudy, with dry conditions through midweek. Monday’s highs will climb into the mid-50s with a developing east wind, gusting to around 20 mph in the afternoon. This pattern holds Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs in the mid-50s and lows in the upper-30s and lower-40s. By Wednesday night, clouds increase and a stretch of unsettled weather returns. A cold front sliding in from the west will bring several rounds of showers from Wednesday night and into the weekend. Daytime highs remain cooler than normal by a couple of degrees, in the lower- to mid-50s, while overnight lows hover near in the mid-30s to 40 degrees. Halloween Forecast Trick-or-treaters will need to keep jackets, raincoats, or ponchos handy this year. Despite afternoon highs in the mid-Temperatures Friday evening will be in the upper-40s, with skies mostly cloudy and a few passing showers possible. It will not be a washout, but light, on-and-off rain could make it damp for some neighborhoods. Winds will stay light to moderate out of the east, making it feel a little cooler after sunset. Overall, it will be cool and possibly wet, but manageable for outdoor Halloween plans. Marine Conditions Boaters will need to prepare for choppy conditions. The National Weather Service has issued Small Craft Advisories beginning Monday night for the Michigan waters of western Lake Erie through 4 p.m. Tuesday and Lake Huron through 4 p.m. Wednesday. Easterly winds of 10 to 20 knots and wave heights of 3 to 5 feet — occasionally up to 6 feet — will create hazardous boating conditions through midweek. Tracking the Tropics Meanwhile, all eyes remain on Hurricane Melissa, a major hurricane in the Caribbean with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph late Sunday afternoon. The storm is forecast to bring life-threatening flash flooding, mudslides, and damaging winds to Jamaica, southern Hispaniola, and eastern Cuba through midweek. While Melissa poses no direct threat to Michigan, it may impact air travel and shipping routes to and from the Caribbean.
