Electricite de France SA’s Framatome unit is seeking German approval to start making Russian-designed nuclear-fuel assemblies this month, with a view to supplying reactors in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria next year. The project aims to provide a new supply of the fuel for nuclear plant operators in central Europe that still use Russian technology and fuel. It also competes with Westinghouse Electric Co., which went through years of trial and challenges to engineer fuel for Soviet-designed VVER reactors.
