Forsyth County NC schools are not out of toilet paper

School principals are obligated to provide essential supplies to students, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Interim Schools Superintendent Catty Moore said Tuesday.
That includes toilet paper.
Local school board members, including Trevonia Brown-Gaither and Sabrina Coone, said at a committee meeting that they received multiple emails asking if schools have enough toilet paper.
The emails were prompted by community efforts to provide schools with supplies. Some schools have asked these groups for toilet paper. The result is a narrative that the financially strapped school district doesn’t have the money for bathroom supplies.
“That makes it seem like we are destitute,” she said. “We haven’t cut off all supplies. We haven’t done those things. It is a school-by-school management situation.”
At the beginning of the school year, each school in the district was given half of its regular budget to spend on school supplies. Some school leaders may have spent all of their budget, but Moore said that, typically, a principal will spend gradually as the year progresses.
She told the school board that she would check to see if any schools had already spent their supply budgets and see what they might need.
As for what principals should ask from the community, Moore offered a thought.
“I’d prefer they not ask for toilet paper,” she said.
