Mr English will start his new role with the online publisher on November 3, in which he will help drive investigations, write commentary and produce stories and features, the publication reports.
Announcing the news, he told The Currency he has been a subscriber to the publication since it was established and has been a “great admirer of its in-depth storytelling”.
Mr English was previously at the helm of Ireland’s biggest-selling newspaper as editor of the Sunday Independent for five years.
The Limerick native joined Mediahuis Ireland in March 2020 and stepped down from his role at the end of May 2025.
Mr English said at the time: “I will be forever grateful for the opportunity to edit the Sunday Independent. It has been a fantastic experience and a great privilege.
“I’m stepping down for personal reasons – from the beginning, I felt that five years would be a good stint and that time has passed incredibly quickly.
“I’ve been hugely fortunate to work with so many talented people in the Sunday Independent team and the wider newsroom, along with the paper’s many excellent contributors,” he added.
Before joining Mediahuis Ireland, he was an editorial director with Iconic Media.
Mr English was also an editor of the Limerick Leader from 2007 to 2016 and spent significant time in sports journalism as deputy sports editor of The Sunday Times in London and as the paper’s sports editor in Ireland.
He is the author of five best-selling books about rugby, including Stand Up and Fight, and the autobiographies of Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll.
