The former Second Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Samira Bawumia, has been re-appointed as a Global Champion of the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA).
This appointment recognises her tireless advocacy for clean cooking, women’s empowerment, and climate justice.
The announcement was made by CCA CEO Dymphna van der Lans during the organisation’s Leadership Series held on 7 September 2025.
Accepting the appointment, Samira Bawumia, the wife of Ghana’s former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stated that clean cooking is critical for health, gender equality, climate justice, and economic empowerment.
“This is not just an energy issue; it’s a critical matter of health, gender equality, climate justice, and economic empowerment,” she said.
What Clean Cooking Alliance is all about
The Clean Cooking Alliance was founded in 2010 with support from the United Nations Foundation.
The organisation tackles household air pollution, which claims roughly four million lives annually.
The CCA also promotes clean cooking technologies, provides grants, supports research, and builds partnerships for global health, climate, and development.
Bawumia’s appointment as Global Ambassador for the CCA is in recognition of her contributions to sustainable energy and climate action.
Her call to action as a Champion of the Clean Cooking Alliance is to advocate for governments worldwide, particularly in Africa, to integrate clean cooking into national strategies.
She is also expected to advocate for millions of African women and children who suffer from the toxic smoke of traditional cooking methods, which lead to health hazards and premature deaths.
Through Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP) and the African Women and Children Conference (AFRIWOCC), Samira Bawumia has created awareness and demanded action on clean cooking and women’s empowerment.
The former Second Lady was previously honoured with the Seven for 7 Award by SEforALL and Ashden in 2019.
